Trump meeting focuses on Supreme Court candidates Kavanaugh, Hardiman

Throughout the search for Trump's second Supreme Court nominee, Kavanaugh was a favorite of the conservative legal cognoscenti. Trump made the announcement on Tuesday afternoon (NZ time).

Casey stated that the list of judges Trump is selecting from was heavily influenced by the Heritage Foundation. Kyl also was a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which will hold a hearing on Trump's choice for the court.

The Senate's top Republican, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, hailed a "superb choice" in Kavanaugh and urged senators to "put partisanship aside and consider his legal qualifications with the fairness, respect, and seriousness that a Supreme Court nomination ought to command".

"The White House expects to immediately hit the ground running once Trump makes his 9 p.m. announcement on Monday, a time he selected for maximum TV exposure as anticipation grows around the pick", Christopher Cadelago reports for Politico.

The official says Trump decided on Kavanaugh because of his large body of jurisprudence cited by other courts, describing him as a judge that other judges read.

And it's significant because his choice is expected to swing the court towards the right. Kavanaugh worked for Kozinski as a clerk in 1991, and the two have maintained professional ties over the years, including when they worked for Kennedy.

Heitkamp, Donnelly and Manchin were the three Democratic senators who voted for Trump's last Supreme Court pick, Neil Gorsuch, who replaced the late Antonin Scalia on the bench in 2017. And they certainly want Trump's choice confirmed before the November election, when Democrats have a long-shot chance of retaking the Senate majority. In the Senate, Republicans hold a slim 51-49 advantage. Ten Democrats from states that Trump won are up for re-election this fall and will be under tremendous pressure to back the president's nominee.

President Trump wants to change the economic relationship with China", Graham said on "Fox News Sunday". DPRK is short for Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the North's official title.

Kavanaugh is likely to be more conservative than Justice Kennedy on a range of social issues. At the top of that list is abortion.

Liberals also fear that a new conservative justice will help overturn the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, which protects a woman's right to an abortion. Kennedy provided a decisive vote in 2015 on an important fair housing case. He was in the running a year ago for the Supreme Court seat left by the death of Justice Antonin Scalia. He was said to be the leading contender in the days after Justice Anthony M. Kennedy announced his retirement.

Judge Brett Kavanaugh built a solidly conservative record during his 12 years on the appeals court in Washington that decides consequential cases on health care, the environment and other major governmental policies. The 53-year-old was born in MA, but started his career in Pittsburgh. The White House hoped to keep the details under wraps until he rolls out his pick from the East Room. He was part of Independent Counsel's Ken Starr's endless investigation of Bill Clinton during Clinton's presidency.

Barrett - a longtime Notre Dame Law School professor who became a federal appeals judge last fall - excited social conservatives with her testimony when she was questioned about her Roman Catholic faith in her nomination hearings a year ago.

Still, ultra-conservative purists distrust Kavanaugh. Barry served alongside Hardiman as a federal appeals judge on the 3rd Circuit before stepping down past year.

Some conservatives lobbied against him, worrying that his upbringing in the suburbs of D.C. could mean he'll be the kind of justice who has disappointed conservatives before.
