Sweet 16 for Roger Federer at Wimbledon

Rafael Nadal

Roger Federer, who has yet to lose a set during this tournament, celebrates his 6-0, 7-5, 6-4 win over France's Adrian Mannarino on Monday to advance to the quarterfinals at Wimbledon.

Meanwhile the last top 10 seed in the ladies' draw, Karolina Pliskova, has also been sent packing.

Many are already anticipating a Sunday final between Federer and Nadal, 10 years after their 2008 epic championship showdown widely regarded as the greatest final ever played.

He had three break-point opportunities during the third set but saved them all.

Julia Goerges advanced to her first Wimbledon semifinal with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 victory over 20th-seeded Kiki Bertens.

Isner rode his big serve to advance over the Greek teenager 6-4, 7-6 (8), 7-6 (4).

"After five years of first-round losses here, I think I've grown a lot to get to the semi-finals".

The stars are aligning, supposedly, towards what would be the most popular contest, and a particularly welcome one on an afternoon where there is also the World Cup final to contend with. The 27-year-old Canadian, runner-up to Andy Murray in 2016, triumphed 6-3, 6-4, 6-7 (5/7), 6-2.

Leading 2-0 in the first set, Mannarino's fault serve was defended by Federer in an nearly "cricket-like" fashion.

A ship carrying US soybeans took off for China last week just before the Asian country's retaliatory tariffs went into effect. The International Monetary Fund has warned that a full-blown trade war could undermine the broadest global upswing in years.

Hsieh - who knocked out No. 1 Simona Halep in the third round - kept the ball in play by returning it over the net as Cibulkova immediately challenged.

Hsieh protested, leading the match referee to come on to discuss the decision with the umpire as calls of "replay the point" came from a bemused crowd on Court 18.

The Argentine, who leads the stubborn baseliner 4-3 in previous encounters, levelled on his second break point and it went to 5-5, but Simon broke again to take the first set off Del Potro in the tournament so far.

The eight-time champion is scheduled to play Wednesday's quarterfinal against Kevin Anderson on No. 1 Court - his first match away from Wimbledon's showcase venue since 2015.

The top-ranked Nadal bludgeoned 37 winners to take down unseeded Czech Jiri Vesely 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 and reach the last eight for the first time in seven years.

The 32-year-old became the first South African man into the last eight at the All England Club since Wayne Ferreira in 1994.

He has also lost all four meetings against the 20-time major victor, failing to win a set off the great Swiss star.

"I actually did get a bit emotional that I was in the last 16 of a Grand Slam that I have been dreaming of winning one day", Tsitsipas said.

As it stands, the 17-time Grand Slam champion is now on 8,950 points while Federer, who has to win a ninth Wimbledon title to retain the full 2,000 points, is now on 8,720.
