In a primetime announcement at the White House, Mr Trump praised his pick as a "brilliant jurist".

Barrett, the only woman under consideration, has the support of Sean Hannity, the Fox News host and close Trump ally, who played golf with the president in New Jersey on Sunday.

President Donald Trump's top contenders for the vacancy appear to be federal appeals judges Amy Coney Barrett, Thomas Hardiman, Brett Kavanaugh and Raymond Kethledge.

President Trump is expected to announce his choice for the Supreme Court Monday night, and the moment the nominee is announced, the battle for confirmation will begin.

When Trump nominated Justice Neil Gorsuch in 2017, he faced an intense backlash from liberal activists and fielded a barrage of hostile questions from Democratic senators during his confirmation hearings.

He has served since 2006 on the influential US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit and was formerly a White House aide under George W Bush.

His wife, Lori Zappala Hardiman, "comes from a family of prominent western Pennsylvania Democrats", a report from a local Philadelphia TV station noted.

LeBron James signing a 'historic moment' for Lakers
The Lakers, a 16-time National Basketball Association champion, have missed the playoffs for five consecutive seasons. Stephenson says the Lakers want him to bring his defensive edge, be a veteran leader and just be himself.

What McConnell reportedly said about Trump's... Barrett was appointed by Trump to the Chicago-based 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals a year ago.

On average, for Supreme Court nominees who have received hearings, the hearing occurred 39 days after the nomination was formally submitted, according to the Congressional Research Service.

Trump had little to say about his choice before the announcement.

Such comments are likely to raise a red flag to moderate Republican senators like Susan Collins, R-Maine, who have said they would not vote for a nominee who has expressed doubts about observing precedents when it comes to abortion and other long-standing Supreme Court decisions. In a recent case involving abortion and immigration, he wrote a decision that temporarily barred a pregnant teenager in immigration custody from obtaining an abortion.

But Trump appointed Barrett to the Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit just nine months ago, and he may well leave her to gain more experience. Former President George W. Bush nominated him to the appeals court in 2003. While waiting, he's penned he has written almost 300 opinions and sent 41 of his law clerks to similar posts at the high court - far more than any of the other leading candidates for the nomination.

Those views could have implications for independent counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of Trump.

Republicans hold 51 seats in the Senate, though Arizona Sen. Ten Democrats from states that Trump won are up for re-election this fall and will be under tremendous pressure to back the president's nominee.

Later in the week, the president also suggested that of the four reported shortlisted candidates, he had preferences, telling reporters: "I think I have it down to four people". And, you know, the concern would be that something could pop up going through all those papers that could make him a tougher pick.
