Morning Roundup: Sagan wins 2nd stage of Tour de France

Froome makes up for lost time

The Taupo rider Patrick Bevan has helped his American outfit BMC Racing to victory on the third stage, a 35.5km team time trial.

Team Sky were beaten into second place by BMC on the 35.5km circuit around Cholet, with Richie Porte's team posting a time of 38:46 - four seconds faster than Team Sky - to put Olympic champion Greg Van Avermaet into the yellow jersey for Tuesday's stage four.

Team Sky finished as runners-up, four seconds behind.

Quick-Step Floors were third at seven seconds down on the winners.

Sagan would have been happy to hold on to it, but the yellow jersey isn't his priority for the Tour, and with the top 59 riders overall separated by just 16 seconds, it was going to take something special from Bora-Hansgrohe to keep him on top.

"It's a good time", said Froome, who dropped 51 seconds following a crash in Stage 1.

World champion Peter Sagan said he had three reasons to be cheerful as he won stage two and took the overall leader's yellow jersey in front of family and friends from Slovakia at the Tour de France on Sunday.

"I'm only some 20 seconds behind Froome so it's not that much".

BMC Racing were the fifth team to start the stage and they laid down the marker early, edging other pre-race contenders Team Sky (38:50) and Mitchelton-Scott (38:55), to find themselves in the hot seat.

Travis Pastrana Jumps the Caesars Palace Fountain in Epic Motorcycle Stunt
Pastrana took the stunt to another level, jumping 16 buses on his 350-pound (roughly 160kg) bike - flying 192ft in the process. In the first jump, Pastrana traveled 143 feet as he leaped over 52 crushed cars that were stacked three high.

"I don't think it is a bad thing to have the yellow jersey for a team looking for a sponsor", said Porte, who crashed out of last year's Tour and lost time in Stage 1 of this edition.

Geraint Thomas of Sky was third overall, three seconds behind.

Porte's BMC team had been expected to make up for their disappointing first day when their Australian leader fell.

"I still regret throwing away those 51 seconds on the first day, but there's a long way to go to Paris".

The 28-year-old Sagan said this win means that "I'm really back" following his disqualification from the 2017 Tour.

Movistar lost 53sec, which leaves Colombian Nairo Quintana, twice runner-up, 1:13 behind Froome - a huge gap after only three days of racing.

They finished in a winning time of 38min 46sec, giving the team a necessary boost, with reports suggesting they may be forced to fold at the end of the year if they can not attract extra sponsorship.

Tomorrow the Tour de France 204-kilometre sprint stage with the only mountain of the fourth category, which the participants of the race will overcome 60 kilometers from the finish.
