Lisa Murkowski says she needs more information on Supreme Court nominee

He also served on President George W. Bush's legal team during the contentious Florida recount following the 2000 presidential election.

The decision has far-reaching implications for America on everything from abortion to guns to immigration.

Kennedy's retirement paves the way for Trump's second Supreme Court appointment.

Kavanaugh has written roughly 300 opinions in his 12 years as a judge, penned several law review articles and spoken at law school and Federalist Society events across the country.

Trump hailed Kavanaugh as "one of the finest and sharpest legal minds of our time" when announcing his nomination.

With reality television-style suspense, he had kept everyone guessing up until the last moment.

When Justice Anthony Kennedy - a swing vote - announced his retirement last month it became clear that Roe v Wade, the landmark 1973 ruling that legalised abortion in the United States would soon be under threat. "Mr. President, I am grateful to you and I am humbled by your faith in me", he declared.

Democrats could bring Judge Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation process to a halt with one simple demand - his paperwork.

In an expectant crowd were the president's lawyer Rudy Giuliani, another key character in special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and long list of Republican senators, conservative grandees and White House staff.

In a stunning turn of events, Trump, the ultimate political outsider had managed to settle on a consummate political insider as the most consequential Supreme Court pick in decades. Those included a number of high-profile cases, including same-sex marriage and upholding a woman's right to an abortion.

Each of the nine justices has a lifetime appointment.

In his dissent, Kavanaugh wrote that it came as a "surprise" that the EPA did not consider costs.

Anchoring this conservative bloc is Thomas, less a jurist than a rigid and embittered ideologue who seems to carry a personal grudge against progressive causes; and Alito, a small-minded jurist whose opinions show more concern with the social ostracism endured by conservatives than with hatred directed against gay couples. But Judge Kavanaugh may not be so accommodating.

Sweet 16 for Roger Federer at Wimbledon
The 32-year-old became the first South African man into the last eight at the All England Club since Wayne Ferreira in 1994. Julia Goerges advanced to her first Wimbledon semifinal with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 victory over 20th-seeded Kiki Bertens.

Barrett, who is 46, has less of a judicial record to review, having just been nominated to the appeals court by Trump past year.

The front-runner was a front-runner for a reason.

Republicans are eager to have a new justice in place when the Supreme Court begins its new term in October.

President Donald Trump considers himself a master showman, having honed the ability to build suspense over 14 seasons of reality television, a convention-shattering presidential campaign and almost 18 months in office.

It's a promise that has helped cement near-record levels of support for his presidency from Republican voters - and for good reason. A majority of 51 votes is needed for a confirmation. Meanwhile, Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona is battling brain cancer and has not been back to the Capitol since December. They didn't have to go out and fight for votes for their causes.

Kavanaugh, whose wife and two daughters were with him Monday night, said he was "deeply humbled" by the nomination.

Democrats are certain to press Mr Trump's latest nominee on the landmark 1973 Roe v Wade ruling that legalised abortion nationwide.

That's the same kind of hyperbolic language that Trump himself likes to employ as he extols his own decisions, many of which turn out to be a lot less than advertised.

By now the White House Supreme Court pick rollout machine is well oiled.

All eyes on which senators?

The millions of documents can be requested by Senate Democrats and would take time for the National Archives, the federal court system and other stake holders to compile, meaning a confirmation hearing before the Senate leaves for August recess would be unlikely. Joe Manchin of West Virginia, Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, and Joe Donnelly of IN, all of whom face tough re-election bids.

All face tough re-election races this November in states Trump won easily in 2016. Of the four liberal justices, three are women (Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Elena Kagan, and Sonia Sotomayor).

Democrats' hopes are pinned on two Republican senators, Susan Collins of ME and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, who both oppose any nominee who threatens the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling recognizing abortion as a constitutional right.
