People Sickened From Parasite Outbreak Linked to Del Monte Vegetables

CDC Reports 212 Confirmed Cases of Cyclospora in Midwest

Before you swear off veggies forever, rest assured that the recall is in full affect. Del Monte has pulled its baby carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, and dill dip all from the shelves. They contain fresh broccoli, cauliflower, celery sticks, carrots, and dill dip, officials said. The CDC and the Food and Drug Administration have not provided data on the number of outbreaks associated with the 28-ounce products. The two cases from MI reportedly purchased the vegetable tray in Wisconsin and therefore MI is not impacted from this outbreak. In some cases, a patient who reports feeling better may get sick again.

The CDC is recalling a Del Monte vegetable tray sold at Kwik Trip and Kwik Star locations after there have been 212 laboratory-confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis in people from Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and MI.

FDA has not identified which of the ingredients is the vehicle for this outbreak; each component of these vegetable trays is under consideration.

The investigation is ongoing and the CDC will provide updates when more information is available.

Starbucks To Eliminate Plastic Straws From All Of Its Stores By 2020
In lieu of the classic drinking straw, Starbucks said it will design alternative-material straw options and "a strawless lid". It's a plastic strawless lid that will come to replace single-use plastic straws that now inundate its coffee shops.

Cyclospora cayetanensis is a microscopic parasite of humans.

Anyone who ate anything from any of the recalled vegetable and dip trays and developed symptoms of Cyclospora infection should seek medical attention and tell their doctors abut the potential exposure to the parasite.

A previous major cyclosporiasis outbreak was reported in 2015, when 546 individuals were infected across 31 states. Symptoms include frequent bowel movements, loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps and pain, bloating, increased gas, nausea, and fatigue. Other symptoms may include vomiting, body aches, headache, fever and other flu-like symptoms. Without treatment, the infection can last from as little as a few days to more than a month. Symptoms may seem to go away and then return one or more times (relapse).
