Passenger train derails in northwest Turkey

"It was a frightful accident", she said.

The train, with over 360 people on board, was travelling from the Edirne region on the Greek and Bulgarian borders to Istanbul´s Halkali station when six of its carriages derailed in the Tekirdag region.

Heavy rain caused the ground between the culvert and the rail to collapse. Local governor Mehmet Ceylan told the NTV channel that helicopters had already taken numerous injured away from the scene.

Anadolu reports that several ambulances are on route to the scene.

Additionally, Turkish General Staff has also sent military helicopters to airlift the wounded passengers.

The first television pictures showed several train carriages laying on their sides, and shocked injured being taken away on stretchers as rescue workers picked through the wreckage.

Later, the Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications said in a statement the accident occurred after the railway track slipped down from its original spot due to torrential rains.

According to reports, the train was travelling from Uzunkopru to Instanbul and came off the rails in the Tekirdag Corlu district.

Turkey's audiovisual authority RTUK later said the government has issued a temporary ban on broadcasting images from the scene.

Over the past few years, Turkish cities have been building high-speed rail lines to replace the country's ageing network.

Ten people were killed and 73 injured in a train crash in northwest Turkey today.
