Sebastian Vettel 'gave it everything' to pass Valtteri Bottas for the win

Ocon happy to be back among the top 10 where he belongs

After a slow start which allowed eventual race-winner Sebastian Vettel to pass him, Vettel's team-mate Kimi Raikkonen collided with Hamilton at turn three, sending his auto off the track and leaving him last of 19 cars.

Vettel strengthens his stranglehold on the championship and will head to his home race in Germany in a fortnight's time with an eight-point lead.

With Silverstone expectant after Hamilton's brilliant qualifying performance and England's progress in the FIFA World Cup, the home crowd's jubilant mood was dampened immediately when Vettel and Bottas got ahead of Hamilton at Turn 1 as the polesitter struggled to get off the line cleanly.

"Obviously he spun, my bad, but that's how it goes sometimes". It was my mistake so that was fine.

Then when Sauber's Marcus Ericsson skidded off with 19 laps left, Hamilton was handed another lifeline with a safety auto.

Raikkonen holds third position in the championship, 55 points behind Vettel.

Trump may quit North Atlantic Treaty Organisation 'unless Britain boosts defence'
Ambassador to NATO Kay Bailey Hutchison says member states are "making progress" to increase defense spending at the urging of President Trump .

Raikkonen continued behind both Red Bulls but was handed a 10-second penalty, which would negate his on-track pass of Daniel Ricciardo into Copse, while Hamilton resumed in 17th.

"Valtteri was in very good shape on his tyres, and closing on Vettel, who we had seen was more challenged on tyre wear during the race. I'm not anxious", he said yesterday.

He was soon up to 16th and by lap nine he was eighth, but some distance from Vettel, who led Bottas by six seconds on lap 12.

Subsequently asked to expand on his comment, Hamilton said: "All I'd say is that it's now two races that the Ferraris have taken out one of the Mercedes, and a five-second penalty and a ten-second penalty doesn't appear to feel. ultimately it spoils the race. And in a flawless world, I would have had new tires - but it wasn't that kind of day for me", Hamilton said.

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff also wondered whether the incident, that sent Hamilton into a spin before he fought back to second at the finish, had been deliberate or simply a sign of incompetence. Vettel pitted from the lead, but Bottas stayed out, to lead on lap 34, as did Hamilton.

Once released, the safety auto barely had time to wind its windows back up before it was required again, Carlos Sainz and Romain Grosjean squeezing eachother and ending up in the gravel at Turn 1. Frenchman Esteban Ocon finished seventh for Force India, who are now level on points with McLaren and ahead on podiums.
