European Parliament rejects draft copyright reform, new vote planned for Sept

GETTYMembers of the ENF founded by Marine Le Pen have been asked to reimburse almost £500,000

The vote before the European Parliament proved a tougher nut to crack, however, and as reported by The Verge it was rejected by a vote of 318-278. The former includes what has been dubbed by the opposition as a "link tax" whereby websites would pay a fee for printing excerpts of news stories or linking to them on other sites.

"All MEPs will get to vote on #uploadfilters and the #linktax September 10-13".

BPI, the association of United Kingdom record labels and organiser of the Brit Awards, says in a statement: "We respect the decision by MEPs to have a plenary discussion on the draft Copyright Directive". The latter would have seen the creation of an automated copyright filter that would flag and potentially ban uploaded media no matter of its original source.

"The broad scope of Article 13 could have covered any copyrightable material, including images, audio, video, compiled software, code and the written word", wrote James Temperton at Wired after the measure was voted down.

By way of a quick recap, the crux of the directive's perceived flaws lay in Article 13 and Article 11.

WND reported in advance of the vote that the EU's committee on legal affairs supported the plan. A similar law that was enacted in Spain four years ago forced Alphabet Inc.to shut down the local edition of Google News.

Joey Chestnut scarfs down 74 hot dogs to win 11th title
In the women's competition, Miki Sudo , 32, defended her title, the fifth year in a row, chomping down 37 hot dogs and buns. Even the 91-degree heatwave couldn't stop these men from gobbling down the buns and meat in record time .

Geoff Taylor, chief executive of the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) and Brit Awards, said: 'We respect the decision by MEPs to have a plenary discussion on the draft Copyright Directive.

Resistance has been especially heated to Article 13: the proposal to make online platforms legally liable for copyrighted material put on the web by users. SACEM remains dedicated to ensuring that creators are recognised and remunerated for the value of their work.

Sir Paul concludes with a plea for MEPs to support the changes, writing: "You hold in your hands the future of music here in Europe".

Citizens have made themselves heard via thousands of emails and tweets, hundreds of calls and a petition signed by almost 1 million people. We congratulate our members for their hard work, and Julia Reda, Catherine Stihler, EDRi and others who have led the fight in Europe to stop these terrible proposals.

Other protests are expected over the next two days before the vote, on 5 July, and European Union citizens are urged to contact representatives in Parliament to Express their disapproval.
