The Collapsing Kentucky Bourbon Warehouse Is No More

The aftermath following the collapse of the remainder of a whiskey warehouse at the Barton 1792 Distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky July 4, 2018.

An estimated 9,000 bourbon barrels tumbled to the ground Wednesday, 12 days after approximately 9,000 barrels were impacted in the first collapse at Warehouse 30.

A spokeswoman for Barton 1792 said no bourbon from the recent spill entered waterways. The distillery owner Sazerac, a Louisiana-based spirits company, already was facing a state fine stemming from the initial collapse.

The half of the rickhouse left standing after the original June 22 event collapsed Wednesday afternoon, releasing an unknown amount of additional alcohol in the process.

KSP officials confirmed to WAVE 3 News that a Fish & Wildlife officer was dispatched to the facility at 300 Barton Road at about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Verify: Is July 4th really independence day?
Later, on July 2, 1776, the Continental Congress voted in favour of getting independence from the rule of Great Britain. One last interesting fact, two of the most well known names on that document are Thomas Jefferson and John Adams .

The warehouse was constructed in the 1940s, and Sazerac indicates it will likely be several weeks before the cause of the collapse is determined. The company credited the distillery team's "preparation and quick action", and notified state government environmental regulators "immediately." the statement said.

It's not clear how numerous barrels can be salvaged, local media reported.

According to its website, the Barton 1792 Distillery had 29 barrel aging warehouses on its property before the accident.

Nelson County Emergency Management director Joe Prewitt said last month he couldn't recall another whiskey warehouse collapse. The images show a large mound of bourbon barrels amid the splintered beams and metal roofing of the structure.

Following Wednesday's collapse, the distillery has begun vacuuming bourbon out of the drainage pools and has hired a private contractor to check Withrow Creek and Beech Fork River every four hours for 48 hours to see if there is any trace of bourbon in the waterways, said John Mura, a spokesman for the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet. Kentucky distillers have more than 6.6 million bourbon barrels aging, according to the Kentucky Distillers' Association.
