Putin, Trump to discuss 'complex' issues, including Syria

US President Donald Trump met Russian President Vladimir Putin at the opening of the G20 summit in July 2017 in Hamburg

Bolton said he brought up both the 2016 election and Russian activities in upcoming congressional elections. "Let them discuss these issues and see exactly where there might be room for progress or where we find there is no room at all".

Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump are scheduled to hold their first one-on-one summit in Helsinki on July 16. The president has been critical of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, suggesting that other member nations do not contribute enough to the alliance and that the United States carries too much of the burden.

The Trump administration has decided not to take any military action to stop the Russian assault on the zone which had originally been serving as a haven for refugees and formerly US -backed rebels. Trump tweeted last week.

The long-delayed summit comes at a time when Russia-U.S. relations have deteriorated to a record level due to multiple disputes including alleged Russian involvement in the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign and divergence in Syria and Ukraine.

"It's something we're concerned about", Bolton said. They're very, very different; the president treats them differently. I think that's an interesting statement, I think it's worth pursuing.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in an interview on June 29 that Putin will not raise the issue of sanctions in his meeting with Trump, although he added that Russia "would not mind" if Trump chose to lift them.

Mr Bolton also said he discussed Russia's annexation of Crimea with Putin.

US intelligence agencies have alleged that Russian hackers had tried to help Trump win the White House, something Russia has flatly denied.

"The election meddling issue was definitely something we talked about", Bolton told CBS's Face the Nation. "I think there were some where it was clear our position was very, very far apart".

Bolton expanded on that theme on Sunday, saying Iran's presence was a question the "two presidents will want to discuss at length". We're going to be talking to them about Syria, we're going to be talking to them about Ukraine. He has also dubiously claimed that it was Democrats who colluded with Russian Federation during the election instead of him - though it's also not clear if he actually believes Russian Federation meddled at all, since he once again implied on Thursday that he believed the Kremlin's denials (over the unequivocal conclusions of the USA intelligence community). It follows Trump's wavering on a question whether USA might someday recognize it as part of Russian Federation.

'We don't want anybody tampering with elections, ' he said.

Bolton simply said tat a "direct conversation" between the two leaders is an important starting point.

How did Bolton feel about that, Wallace asked.
