Pompeo, Lavrov discuss Trump-Putin summit in July

The Kremlin spokesman added that "a face-to-face meeting between Putin and Trump will take place at the beginning" of the summit, if a preliminary agreement were to be reached with the USA side.

The Kremlin on Tuesday said Vladimir Putin would be comfortable with holding one-on-one talks with President Donald Trump at their summit later this month in Helsinki, according to a report.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov suggested the subject may be on the agenda during a press conference with his opposite number in Jordan.

The head of a US congressional delegation visiting Russian Federation said Tuesday he hopes for "a new day" in repairing relations between Russian Federation and the U.S. "We are competitors, but we don't necessarily need to be adversaries". Speaking by phone, Lavrov and Pompeo also discussed Syria, strategic stability and the situation on the Korean peninsula, the ministry said.

"We're hoping that coming out of the Putin-Trump meeting in Helsinki, it will be the beginning, maybe, of a new day", Shelby added.

"With regard to Trump's negotiating chips, it doesn't really seem like he has any because we've already seen that he is denying that Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 election", she said.

Lavrov, speaking in English, said he hoped that the USA senators' visit "will symbolise the resumption of relations between the (US and Russian) parliaments".

The senators then met with representatives of the Duma, the lower house of the Russian parliament.

The U.S. and Russia have been at odds over a number of issues including Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, Russian actions in Syria and its 2014 annexation of Crimea.
