Trump plans to announce Supreme Court pick July 9

Headlines this week were dominated by news that Justice Anthony Kennedy, a swing vote on the Supreme Court, will retire next month and that a man has been charged with killing five people at the Capital Gazette newsroom in Annapolis. She suggested she would contact Mr. Trump's assistant, but then made a decision to try to transmit the call "through signal", a reference to the White House Communications Agency, originally known as the White House Signal Corps, which provides emergency mobile communications for the president wherever he goes.

CBS News has learned that the two leading contenders are D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Brett Kavanaugh and Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Amy Coney Barrett, both women.

Some possible nominees being eyed include Thomas Hardiman, who serves alongside Trump's sister on the Philadelphia-based 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, and Raymond Kethledge, a federal appeals court judge who clerked for Kennedy. As the Post reports, Trump "also wants to see a portfolio of solid academic writing, though this adviser acknowledged Trump does not care to read it; he simply wants to know it exists". "I actually saw him on television last night where he said he'd love the job".

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Sunday. "Usually they don't say that".

Collins stressed that Trump "should not feel bound by that list".

Trump also warned that if ICE were eliminated, the country would be "overrun with the worst criminal elements you have ever seen". Michael Grimm in a GOP primary and former Trump adversary Mitt Romney won the Republican nomination to be Utah's next US senator.

The Judicial Crisis Network, a conservative political campaign organization, has launched a seven-figure ad buy aimed at vulnerable Democrats, said chief counsel and policy director Carrie Severino.

"We have to pick a great one", Trump said at a North Dakota rally on Wednesday. "What we're seeing here is Gorsuch 2.0".

"It is exciting though, right?" said Trump.

Trump himself described Supreme Court nominee selection as the most important decision he can make "outside of war and peace".
