We're here to win, not plot final route, says England's Southgate

England training

England manager Gareth Southgate will reportedly replace Harry Kane, the 2018 FIFA World Cup leading goalscorer, with Jamie Vardy for Thursday's showdown with Belgium.

England take on Belgium in a battle to decide the winners of Group D on Thursday evening, with the team that finishes second in the pool likely to have a more favourable route to the quarter-finals of a competition that has yet to identify a clear favourite.

"It's momentum and we want to keep that moment going", Southgate said at the pre-match press conference.

"We're trying to develop a winning mentality and I can't imagine a situation where I stand in front of the group of players I've got and start talking to them about anything else", said the former under-21s coach.

"We want to win the game", said Southgate.

They'll play the winners of group H - one of Japan, Senegal and Colombia - in Moscow on Tuesday, kick-off 7pm.

"We have no idea who, when or where we will play in the next round but we are pleased that we're in the next round".

Now, we seem to be faced with a similar dilemma with teams that play later can engineer their performance to chart their course.

QUALIFYING: Hamilton claims majestic 75th pole in France
Ferrari's championship leader Sebastian Vettel , a point ahead of the Briton after seven of 21 races, qualified in third place. A wheel then came off Sergio Perez's Force India auto at speed on the Mistral straight in the late afternoon.

In fact, multiple changes might make the game even more competitive, according to Southgate.

Southgate has confirmed Eric Dier will start against Belgium, although the Tottenham man was only selected in 56% of your teams.

"From the scan there was no further damage but it is still uncomfortable", Martinez said. "We want to win". "We just want to keep winning and winning".

"We had a choice with our friendly matches to play teams who would be a bit easier, but we deliberately chose to play against top teams because we knew it would be better challenge". He followed that up with a hat-trick against Panama, giving the forward the outright lead in the race for the Golden Boot ahead of Romelu Lukaku and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Fans have paid thousands of pounds on airline tickets, match tickets, and hotel bills.

The crowd booing France and Denmark in their final game - a tiresome draw and the only 0-0 result of the tournament so far - is a reminder that nothing but players giving their absolute best will be satisfactory. And both players will be keen to increase their tally tomorrow.

This is the World Cup.
