The Coldest Place on Earth Is Even Colder Than Scientists Thought

However, a weather station can only measure temperature in its vicinity, which is why scientists made a decision to use satellite observations to find even colder recesses on the East Antarctic Plateau than those recorded at Vostok.

The dataset was the same one that produced the previous record-low temperatures for 2013, but has since been updated to account for more up-to-date measurements by weather stations.

However, weather stations are not always reliable because they can't measure temperatures over an expansive area.

They found the record low was about 5 degrees Celsius (9 degrees Fahrenheit) colder than they originally reported, about minus 98 degrees Celsius (minus 144 degrees Fahrenheit).

The team collected data from the Southern Hemisphere's winter season between 2004 and 2016.

Remarkably, the lowest temperatures observed at all of these hollows on the ice sheet was right around minus 98 Celsius, even though some of them were spaced tens of miles apart.

Five years ago, a group of scientists conducted a sophisticated temperature mapping study to find that the snowy East Antarctic Plateau, which encompasses the South Pole, is the coldest place on Earth. This time, they also factored in atmospheric dryness of the atmosphere, as drier air makes snow cover lose heat faster, lead study author Ted Scambos, a senior research scientist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center at the University of Colorado Boulder, said in a statement.

Colbert, Fallon, O'Brien 'collude' on response to Trump attacks
I didn't think that would be a compliment: "'He did the thing that we all wanted to do'". It's surprising Trump is orange because if you ask me, he is bananas".

"It's a place where Earth is so close to its limit, it's nearly like another planet", says study leader Ted Scambos, a researcher at the National Snow and Ice Data Center at the University of Colorado, Boulder.

The scientists, who published their findings in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, say this temperature is probably as cold as it can get on Earth.

Antarctica's eastern plateau has the coldest temperatures on Earth. Herrera says that the previous high-minimum temperature record for any 24-hour period was 41.9°C (107.4°F), set at nearby Khassab Airport in Oman on June 27, 2011. Satellites sensed that within this area about 100 locations had surface temperatures fall to minus 144 degrees Fahrenheit from 2004-2016. That is, in the new study, it is the temperature that was recorded from space above the Earth's surface, and not directly from the air on the surface of the planet.

Incredibly completely dry, very cool air penetrates the ice pockets and also the air obtains chillier still, up until climate condition transform. The weather conditions on the plateau did not change, but the adjusted satellite data gave the researchers a more accurate picture of what the actual lowest temperature was. This is unusual considering that some were located hundreds of kilometers apart. That got them wondering: Is there a limit to how cold it can get on the plateau? After the temperature drops below a certain point, the air cools so slowly that it can't get perceptibly colder before the weather conditions change, according to the researchers.

Sure enough, they found about a hundred little pockets of exceptional cold scattered across the highest parts of the ice sheet.

Keep in mind that this isn't really the like the most affordable temperature level ever before taped utilizing tools at ground degree.
