Estimated 230,000 gallons of oil spilled

Emergency Officials Meet

Williams added that almost half the spill had been contained with booms near the derailment site, with additional booms downstream, amid concerns that the oil may contaminate the water supply as far away as Omaha, Nebraska, some 240 km to the south.

About 100,000 gallons had been hemmed off using booms out of the estimated 230,000 gallons spilled, BNSF said in a statement on Saturday.

Rail cars carrying crude oil are shown derailed about a mile south of Doon, Iowa, on Friday, June 22, 2018. "We had a large supply in our water towers and we are using our interconnection with rock valley rural water to recharge our water supply".

Tank cars carrying crude oil are shown derailed in Lyon County, Iowa, Friday. The spill has raised concerns about drinking water downstream.

Officials still hadn't determined the cause of Friday morning's derailment, but a disaster proclamation issued by Gov. Kim Reynolds for Lyon and three other counties placed the blame on rain-fueled flooding.

Lyon County Sheriff Steward Vander Stoep said between 30 and 40 semitrailers containing cleanup equipment had arrived at the scene near Doon, Iowa, by Friday afternoon.

Some of the cars soon began leaking crude oil into the Little Rock River floodwaters, prompting an evacuation of nearby houses and sparking fears of drinking water contamination.

Opec edges closer to raising oil output, Iran’s nod is key
Nigerian Energy Minister Emmanuel Kachikwu said that supply was ultimately likely to increase by 600,000 to 700,000 barrels a day. Phil Flynn, an oil analyst with The Price Futures Group, expects a deal for around an extra 1 million barrels a day.

Some officials have speculated that floodwaters eroded soil beneath the train track.

It's not yet clear how many tankers are leaking or how much oil has escaped.

Danger from the spill has been exacerbated by recent rainfall, which has caused the Rock River to overflow its banks along the route of the train tracks.

Williams said the derailed cars were a model known as DOT-117Rs, indicating they were newer or had been retrofitted to be safer and help prevent leaks in the event of an accident. That empties into the Missouri River at Sioux City. Cleanup crews have been dispatched.

Most people have been allowed back into their homes in Rock Valley, Iowa community after they were evacuated because of flooding.

Williams says crews have been skimming oil from floodwaters.

The derailment also caused concern downstream, including as far south as Omaha, about 150 miles from the derailment site. Floodwater along the Little Rock River is running over a road north of the track. The Little Rock flows into the Rock River.
