Pantera drummer Vinnie Paul dies at 54

The Texas-born musician, real name Vincent Paul Abbott, passed away on Friday, according to a statement posted on the group's Facebook page. The cause of death is now unconfirmed, and Pantera's statement says that "No further details are available at this time".

"Vinnie Paul Abbott wasn't just a drummer, he was an iconic fixture in the metal and hard rock community, a pioneer, and an absolute legend", the statement read. No further details have been released.

His brother, Pantera guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell, was shot and killed while performing on stage in 2004.

Over the course of 22 years, the band released nine albums, including 1994 U.S. Billboard 200 chart-topper Far Beyond Driven. Afterward, Paul played in notable acts such as Damageplan and, for the last twelve years, the supergroup HELLYEAH. Pantera was nominated for four Grammys.

"Very sad to hear about the passing of Vinnie Paul", he wrote. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, bandmates, friends, and fans through this hard time".

"So sorry to hear about Vinnie Paul". "We don't have much info to give you other then Vinnie is now with Dime and they are together in a better place". Say hello to [Darrell] for me. "Rest in Peace Vinnie, you will truly be missed and forever remembered".
