No Plans to Support VR on Xbox Consoles

(ADR) (NYSE:SNE) and its Playstation VR.

In an interview with Gamesindustry.biz Mike Nichols, chief marketing officer of Redmond's gaming division, poured cold water on the smouldering ideas of Xbox One VR support. Based on what was said, it's pretty clear that Xbox VR is not going to happen.

Recent reports reveal Microsoft has terminated its plans to offer virtual reality (VR) support for the Xbox, affirming PC remains the "best platform" for virtual and mixed reality.

"PC is probably the best platform for more immersive VR and MR ... but as it relates to Xbox, no", he said. But, it seems like a shrewd and savvy move by Xbox.

Still, virtual reality is a differentiation point for its chief competitor, the PlayStation 4.

Later that year though, Microsoft released its own Windows "mixed reality" headsets with hardware partners like ASUS, Acer and Samsung. However, the company sees less potential in adopting it for the Xbox.

Lewis Hamilton - It's great to be back
The New Zealander crashed out on the opening lap of the previous race in Canada and has scored only one point so far this season. Sunday's race will be the first French Grand Prix in a decade and the first at Le Castellet's Paul Ricard circuit since 1990.

The two key advantages of the new console were native 4K graphics and support for Xbox VR. Microsoft had chosen to sit out the early VR craze when Sony jumped aboard with PlayStation VR, nearly certainly in part because the weaker hardware of the Xbox One and One S weren't capable of providing a satisfactory experience.

When the company announced its newest console, in 2016, it said the device would be capable of delivering "high-fidelity virtual reality".

Now years later, Microsoft has slowed its pace. That would have been a console record and the kind of numbers that could have had a real impact on Microsoft stock. With VR growing more slowly than expected, it's not the time to dive headfirst into headsets when Xbox has more pressing problems to focus on. Could it have helped Microsoft hit that lofty sales target?

Xbox maker Microsoft is already in the mixed reality space thanks to its HoloLens headset, which houses a PC that places 3D holograms on top of the view of the real world.

The Xbox 360 gaming console has been loved worldwide by the gaming enthusiasts and it still competently rivals Sony's Play Station. At least until the next generation of video game consoles hit...
