Millions of British children exposed to harmful pollution

Today, the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health have announced that the potentially harmful impact of indoor air pollution on children is to be the subject of a major study for the first time in the UK.

Oxford City Council was named as the number one local authority in the United Kingdom for tackling air pollution by Government Business and ClientEarth named the City Council as one of the best local authorities in the United Kingdom for tackling air pollution.

"Unsurprisingly, rural areas are more likely to have cleaner air".

The annual cost to the United Kingdom of air pollution is in the region of £20 billion and 25% of all auto journeys in the United Kingdom are less than two miles.

Councillor Susan Brown, Leader of Oxford City Council said: "I am proud that the lead that we have taken in Oxford on tackling poor air quality through our low emission zone and now our commitment to a zero emission zone is being recognised".

Pledges to take action include: leaving the auto at home just one day a week; car-sharing when possible; working from home regularly; walking and cycling more; and encouraging friends to do the same.

The move, by Metrolink owner Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), is part of a drive to encourage people to think about changing travel habits to improve air quality.

This of course stands in start contrast to Trump's recent statements on North Korea, in which he declared the nuclear threat from North Korea to be over.

Events will take place across Greater Manchester on Clean Air Day, including free lung-health checks and the chance to see or try out the latest electric cars and bikes in Manchester City Centre's Exchange Square.

The Road Haulage Association is outraged at Leeds City Council plans to charge pre-Euro VI lorries £50 per day to enter their Clean Air Zone - due to be launched in January 2020.

As a part of the National Clean Air Day, researchers from the University of York have been involved in teaching children the significance of air quality.

"They knew absolutely the things that they wanted to see, from more electric vehicle charging points in Waltham Forest, tougher penalties to those idling outside the school gate, more enforcement of the most polluting industries and vehicles in our borough, to adults taking less auto journeys and walking around the borough more, especially for the daily school runs".

"We wouldn't make our children drink dirty water, so why are we allowing them to breathe dirty air?" "This campaign is created to help the public find out more about the issues surrounding air pollution and how everyone can make a difference".

The council is proposing to introduce a Clean Air Zone (CAZ).

"Indoor air pollution needs to be taken as seriously as outdoor air pollution". Find out more about other indicators of air pollution here.
