Trump's immigration order sparks confusion, deep concern

Edited by Adam Vieyra Mother Jones

An official with Health and Human Services says the more than 2,300 children separated from their parents at the border as a result of a zero-tolerance policy on illegal crossings won't be immediately reunited with their families.

He suggests the order is a permanent solution. Trump has instructed Attorney General Jeff Sessions to ask a federal court to overturn the settlement. As a matter of regulation, they are not allowed to be detained with their parents during legal proceedings.

Trump's order, drafted by Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, directs her department to keep families together after they are detained for illegal border-crossing.

THE FACTS: It doesn't solve the problem.

Alisson Becker makes Liverpool FC, Real Madrid decision
Alisson Becker has made a decision to move to Real Madrid ahead of Liverpool FC this summer, according to a report in England. Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has not ruled out going back to the negotiating table with Liverpool over Nabil Fekir .

The move comes as the practice, as a result of the Trump administration's "zero tolerance" policy against illegal immigration, has aroused outrage and sharp criticism from both home and overseas in recent days, denounced as cruel, inhuman.

"We've got to be keeping families together", Trump said.

That means without further action from Congress or the courts, the Trump administration could be forced to again separate the immigrant children from their parents in three weeks. Families will also be prioritized in the adjudication process.

Trump's climbdown came after he faced intense pressure from across the political spectrum and from religious, political and world leaders to halt the separations, which produced days of heartrending news coverage of crying children - some of whom were kept in cage-like detention centers.
