Japan to halt missile attack drills after Trump-Kim summit

In a presidential declaration sent to Congress, Donald Trump said North Korea's nuclear program still poses an unusual and extraordinary threat to the U-S.

Trump, who met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at an historic summit in Singapore earlier this month, had said the remains of 200 American servicemen had been sent back.

This of course stands in start contrast to Trump's recent statements on North Korea, in which he declared the nuclear threat from North Korea to be over.

The cases will remain in the border village of Panmunjom for a few days until being sent into North Korea so the North can begin the process of returning the remains of Americans who were killed or died during the 1950s conflict, South Korea's Yonhap News Agency reported.

The Trump administration is expecting North Korea to return up to 200 sets of remains believed to be United States service members who died during the Korean War, four administration officials said earlier this week.

In reality, the statement going along with the executive order is practically a form letter, closely mirroring what is issued annually since the Bush-era as a justification to give the executive branch power to impose a series of sanctions on North Korea. "And they blew up sites where they test and do the testing", the president said.

"The Japan U.S. alliance plays a crucial role in this", Onodera said.

After almost five hours of unprecedented talks between Trump and Kim, the two leaders signed a document in which Kim "reaffirmed his firm and unwavering commitment to complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula" and the U.S. agreed to "provide security guarantees".

Recovery efforts have been subject to rising tensions over the North's nuclear weapons program.

"The detailed negotiations have not begun", Mattis said.

"But we've seen this before, and that was words on a paper and promises made, so now we have to see action", he said.
