Dozens hurt as attacker tries to throw grenade at Ethiopia prime minister

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has won praise for ambitious reforms he has unveiled in less than three months in office

An explosion has rocked a rally for Ethiopia's new prime minister.

"Love will win. Forgiveness will win".

"In recent past days, we have been receiving reports claiming that Somalia signed an agreement with Ethiopia".

"A few Ethiopians were injured".

The PM affirmed that government will never accept any deal violating the country's sovereignty.

Ethiopia's reformist new prime minister says "a few people have lost their lives" and others have been injured in the explosion that went off shortly after he spoke to a huge rally of supporters in the capital, Addis Ababa.

Informal in a neon green T-shirt, Abiy told the tens of thousands of supporters that change was coming and there was no turning back.

The rally was in part to express popular support for the prime minister's reforms, such as peace overtures to its once bitter enemy Eritrea, including promises to give up territory now held by Ethiopia.

Mr Abiy, 42, took office in April and announced the release of tens of thousands of prisoners, the opening of state-owned companies to private investment and a peace deal with rival Eritrea. Killing others is a defeat.

Uruguay advances with win over Saudi Arabia
Nathian Nandez and Giorgian De Arrascaeta are dropped in favour of Carlos Sanchez and the 32 year-old Cristian Rodriguez . Luis Suarez netted the match's only goal in the 23rd minute in his 100th worldwide for Uruguay .

It is one of many policy shifts announced since Mr Abiy took office, moves that could reshape Ethiopia's relations with its neighbours and have equally dramatic impacts inside the country of 100 million people.

Addressing the nation minutes after he was rushed to safety, Abiy called the blast a "well-orchestrated attack" but one that failed.

Three suspects, two men and a woman, were immediately arrested, Seyoum said.

The blast came just as the master of ceremonies was welcoming viewers from overseas and said in English "this is the day that Ethiopia has become proud".

"I saw some five people injured following the blast", he added.

The Eritrean ambassador to Japan, Estifanos Afwerki, said his country "strongly condemns the attempt to incite violence" at what he described the first ever demonstration for peace in the history of Ethiopia.

Mr Tsege recently told the BBC that his release came after Prime Minister Abiy had threatened to resign.

The United States has been among those in the global community expressing support for the dramatic changes in Ethiopia, a key security ally in a turbulent region with neighbours including Somalia and South Sudan.

He succeeded Hailemariam Desalegn, who resigned in February amid a wave of anti-government protests led by the country's two largest ethnicities, that started in late 2015 and left hundreds of people dead.
