World's Oldest Sumatran Orangutan Dies Aged 62

'Respectful end for an old lady': World's oldest orangutan dies in Perth

Puan is believed to have been born in a jungle in Sumatra, Indonesia, in 1956 and she had been at Perth Zoo since 1968.

The world's oldest Sumtran orangutan, Puan has bid the Perth Zoo a goodbye after it died at age 62 leaving 54 descendants behind.

"She did so much for the colony at Perth Zoo and the survival of her species", said primate supervisor at Perth Zoo Holly Thompson. Her great-grandson Nyaru was the latest individual to be released into the wild.

Puan's 54 descendants have spread across the globe, inhabiting zoos in Europe, the United States, Australia and Singapore.

In a eulogy indeed fit for a "grand old lady", a zookeeper has paid tribute to the world's oldest Sumatran orangutan.

Puan was euthanised on Monday after suffering age-related complications that the zoo said were affecting her quality of life.

Her descendants now make up almost 10 per cent of the total population of the species in zoos around the world.

Mickelson apologizes 4 days after violating golf rules
He jogged after it and tapped it back up towards the hole as it was still rolling. "I took the two-shot penalty and moved on". He was immediately issued with a two shot penalty for his actions and he's surely longing for the clubhouse now.

Perth Zoo broke the sad news this morning, Puan the orangutan has died.

At 62 years she lived well beyond her typical life expectancy and was recognised by the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest verified member of her species in 2016.

It read: 'Over the years Puan's eyelashes had greyed, her movement had slowed down and her mind had started to wander. "But to me, she'll always remain a big part of my life". "We knew what to do with Puan, and if she was unhappy she would just kick her foot".

Martina Hart, Puan's chief zookeeper wrote an obituary for the ape in The West Australian newspaper today.

There are less than 15,000 Sumatran orangutans living in the world at the moment, as per the World Wildlife Fund.

The orange apes are solitary but social animals and tend to live in small groups until they reach adulthood.
