Trump to meet Queen Elizabeth on UK visit, says US envoy

Protests have been mounting in the US over the controversial policy including on Capitol Hill last night

The Prime Minister said that she "clearly and unequivocally" condemns the policy, which has seen thousands of children forcibly separated from their parents at the Mexican border. "This is wrong, this is not something that we agree with, this is not the United Kingdom's approach", May told parliament.

May, the leader of the U.K.'s Conservative Party, has occasionally criticized Trump and his policies, even as she's worked to maintain her country's steadfast alliance with the United States.

British Prime Minister Theresa May on Wednesday, June 21, said images from the United States of migrant children kept in cages were "deeply disturbing" and that she would press President Donald Trump on the issue.

Although it is not a formal state visit, which would include pomp, pageantry and a banquet with the queen, Trump will still meet the monarch, Johnson said.

"Meeting Her Majesty is the most important thing, because she's the head of state, and from then on, it'll be what the president wants to do".

For weeks the US President refused to reverse his administration's "zero tolerance" enforcement policy, which has led to the separation of more than 2,300 children from their parents at the border.

Record 68.5 Million Displaced in 2017, 3M Refugees Created — UN Refugee Agency
In addition, 70 per cent of the world's displaced are nationals of just 10 countries, according to the UNHCR report. In its annual Global Trends report , UNHCR said 68.5 million people were displaced as of the end of 2017.

Mr Trump is facing pressure from both sides of the political divide in Washington to end a "zero-tolerance" approach to illegal border crossings which requires adult migrants to be held in custody for prosecution, separated from their children.

Trump has always been a controversial figure in Britain and has called into question the state of U.S.

But the PM stressed that the UK-US special relationship meant that she could fully air disagreements, which Britain had with American policy, with the President.

Britain's longest-serving monarch, who is now 92 years old, has met with nearly all serving USA presidents during her reign.

Despite firm details still being arranged, it is thought that the meeting will take place at Windsor Castle as it will be closed off to the public on July 13.

A spokeswoman for Buckingham Palace declined to comment. His upcoming visit in July is expected to draw protests.
