U.S. Open leaderboard 2018: Highlights from Round 4 at Shinnecock Hills

Brooks Koepka became the first U.S. Open champion in 29 years to successfully defend his title when he clinched a one-stroke victory on Sunday.

"I didn't feel like I played badly at all", Johnson said.

A day after scores soared on the dried out greens, the US Golf Association admitted the course got out of hand, adding plenty of moisture and some slightly more forgiving pins.

Koepka's birdie at the par-5 16th stretched his lead to two shots over Tommy Fleetwood, who tied the U.S. Open single-round record with a 63.

"It's much more gratifying the second time", said Koepka, who had battled a partially torn wrist tendon that sidelined him almost four months since his major breakthrough previous year.

The USGA tucked several hole locations near the edges of the crowned greens at Shinnecock Hills, and then watched some extraordinary scenes unfold as several players putted their balls off the 15th green.

Koepka never lost the lead.

Brooks Koepka, two-time U.S. Open champion, was loving life. Nowhere was that more evident than on the par-3 11th.

This victory will leave only one unusual Koepka Family Tradition in its wake. "I was hitting the ball well and I was putting the ball well, but I just had to keep going".

Gareth Southgate tells England squad the starting XI to face Tunisia
My wife will give me the heads-up - I'm waiting on the text saying: "Get back home" - and I'll get back as fast as possible. What we were doing in training was completely different to how Iceland played in the game.

"When you finish you always feel like you're going to be a bit short, but we'll see", added Fleetwood, a victor of four tournaments on the European Tour and in his first season as a PGA Tour member.

"If somebody is offended by that, I apologize to them but toughen up". Then, the triple putt on No. 18 at the 2015 U.S. Open when Johnson had opportunities to win from 12 feet and tie from 4 feet only to settle for a bogey and second-place finish to Jordan Spieth.

It was the first time since 2013 at Merion that no one broke par in the US Open, and of the four overnight leaders, Koepka was the only player to shoot an under par final round. "I enjoy being pushed to the limit". I feel really good.

Until the ball is regulated back to a reasonable level (does anyone think the game needs people hitting the ball 30 yards longer than Norman or Jack Nicklaus?) and the USGA continue to obsess with par we will continue to see great courses with dimensions completely distorted in an attempt to identify the best players. They have had a major impact every day - from easier to harder Thursday and Saturday, and from harder to easier on Friday.

Davis told Golf Channel he would have liked a mulligan, the same word he used almost a month ago when discussing the 2004 US Open at Shinnecock Hills when the seventh green wouldn't hold shots and had to be lightly sprayed with water between groups.

"It would just be nice, if I'm not sitting here wishing I made cut at five or six over", said Fowler, who teed off at 2:26 p.m. Koepka and Johnson had begun the day at +3, holding a share of the lead with Tony Finau and Daniel Berger. But Koepka now has two to Johnson's one, and it seems like his talent deserves more. A birdie on the final home gave him an even-par 70 to finish alone in third and remain No. 1 in the world.

In 2014 the Open was played on a Pinehurst No. 2 course that had undergone a peculiar renovation in which most of the rough was removed and a "crop scientist" replanted indigenous growth. Johnson's Saturday brought him back to the field and during the final round it turned into anyone's game.

Of course that final day into 2004 descended into something of a farce as early in the day players putted off super slick greens and scores were well in excess of par.
