Trump's trade adviser apologises for comments on Trudeau

President Donald Trump talks with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during a G-7 Summit welcome ceremony Friday

Trump's ire was not doused by time and Tuesday he spoke at a press conference in Singapore after meeting with North Korea's Kim Jong Un, saying Canada would pay for Trudeau's perceived treachery.

The insults were supposedly a response to the post-G7 news conference in which Trudeau repeated his diplomatic criticism of Trump's steel and aluminum tariffs and said he would stand up for Canadians.

The G7 summit came after the Trump administration made a decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from the European Union (EU), Canada and Mexico, which had drawn strong opposition from the domestic business community and US major trading partners.

"Let me correct a mistake I made", Navarro said at a conference in Washington hosted by The Wall Street Journal.

Trump and Trudeau are locked in a tiff over tariffs after the president last week said he would impose penalties on steel and aluminium imports.

The two-day summit in Charlevoix, Quebec, featured a tense standoff between Trump and other G7 leaders.

Before Trump arrived in Canada for the G7 summit he fired a shot at Trudeau, calling the prime minister "indignant" for holding to Canadian positions on supply management in the dairy industry and trade generally.

She said the answer to the dispute was simple: "The U.S. has to remove these unfair, illegal tariffs from Canada and from its allies". We just booked a $3,000 vacation to handsome British Columbia.

"I actually like Justin, you know, I think he's good, I like him, but he shouldn't have done that", Trump said.

Paul Manafort to be Jailed Following Witness Tampering Allegation
Manafort's initial indictment stemmed from work that he did before he joined the Trump campaign. On Friday afternoon, the president did question the revocation of Manafort's bail.

Navarro later apologized for the comments, telling a news conference in Washington on Tuesday: "My job is to send a signal of strength".

The relationship between the USA and its allies was already off-balance after Mr. Trump just a week before the summit imposed 25% tariffs on steel and 10% tariffs on aluminum from the European Union and Canada.

"I used language that was inappropriate, and basically lost the power of that message", Navarro said.

In a formal acknowledgement of verbal attacks, Trudeau rose in the Commons Wednesday to publicly thank Conservative Opposition Leader Andrew Sheer, all opposition MPs and "all Canadians for standing together in this moment of difficulties in our relationship with the United States".

He added: "Why should I, as President of the United States, allow countries to continue to make Massive Trade Surpluses, as they have for decades, while our Farmers, Workers & Taxpayers have such a big and unfair price to pay?"

Trump's trade policy will hurt Canada, and Trudeau was well within his right to fire back.

Navarro's willingness to walk back his outburst marked a departure from the Trump administration's never-say-you're-sorry approach to political crises.

The other countries at the G-7 summit, however, rallied to Mr. Trudeau's support.
