Trump says DPRK no longer 'nuclear threat'

US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un shake hands ahead of their meeting at Capella Hotel in Singapore on June 12

The joint declaration by US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un reiterated Pyongyang's commitment to "work towards complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula".

Speaking to reporters from Seoul, South Korea, Pompeo was laying out an ambitious timeline for denuclearization following President Donald Trump's meeting with Kim Jong Un.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo arrived in South Korea on Wednesday to discuss details of how denuclearisation could be achieved.

The secretary of state dismissed a report by North Korean state media that Mr Trump and Mr Kim had agreed to a "step-by-step" process of nuclear dismantling.

Democratic lawmakers pointed out that North Korea had often made similar statements in the past about "denuclearization", all the while developing nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles that could be capable of striking the US, Reuters reported.

It was the first time a sitting USA president met face to face with a North Korean leader.

"So have a lot of other people", Trump said.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi described the Singapore summit as an "equal dialogue" between the two sides, adding that "no-one will doubt the unique and important role played by China: a role which will continue".

"The summit created this enormous historic opportunity for us to move forward and will fundamentally really shape the relationship between the United States and North Korea", Pompeo said.

Pompeo's comments came after North Korean state media reported on Wednesday that Trump had agreed to a "step-by-step" process, suggesting that North Korea would gain concessions from the U.S. at the same time.

At the heart of negotiations was the "complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization" of the Korean peninsula in exchange for "security guarantees" for the North's mercurial leader, Kim Jong Un.

"There is no longer a Nuclear Threat from North Korea (the DPRK)". But for the rest of us who are watching and know the history of North Korea, we should be skeptical. "Meeting with Kim Jong Un was an interesting and very positive experience", the US president tweeted Wednesday morning after returning to Washington from Singapore, where he had held talks with Kim.

Trump has been criticized for lending legitimacy to the North Korean dictator, whose regime has an atrocious human rights record, by attending the meeting in Singapore.

Pompeo said a day earlier he would like to accomplish major nuclear disarmament in North Korea within Trump's current term.

Two North Korean missiles flew over Japan previous year as North Korea made rapid advances in developing a missile capable of striking the US mainland with a nuclear warhead.

"If (Abe's) visit to Pyongyang in August proves hard", he could hold talks with Kim on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum in Russia's Vladivostok in September, the Yomiuri said. Kim Jong-un indicated that in Singapore and shared that vision.

The president also vowed the country's own efforts to rid the North of nuclear weapons and establish peace on the Korean Peninsula.

He also announced an unexpected end to US-South Korea military drills.

"The most directly involved party in Korean Peninsula issues is us".

Brad Parscale, the Trump 2020 campaign manager, said Acosta's press credentials should be "immediately" suspended, calling the journalist an "absolute disgrace" on Twitter.

The joint annual U.S.

Harris said his understanding was that any suspension would involve only major military exercises and that regular training of United States forces in South Korea would continue, although final decisions were up to the Department of Defense. The official acknowledged, however, it was still not certain how that was going to happen.
