Meds With Depression as Adverse Side Effect Commonly Used

The result of a new study show that one-third of adults in the United States are taking medications that have depression and suicide listed as potential side-effects

Many Americans may not realize they are at risk of depression because of the medicines they take.

More than one-third of adults in the USA take prescription drugs not knowing they could potentially cause depression or increase the risk of suicide, a new study finds.

For this study, researchers looked at 26,000 American adults and their prescription drug use from 2005 to 2014.

These common drugs include birth control and hormonal pills, blood pressure and heart medications, proton pump inhibitors, painkillers, and even the simple antacids.

A new study shows using multiple prescriptions might affect your risk of developing depression.

He also advised people not to stop taking medication out of fear they may develop depression, particularly because so many on the list are used for long-term treatment.

As per the lead author of the study, Dima Mazen Qato from the Illinois University the use of drugs having suicidal or depression as the possible side effects has been on a rise.

A new study reveals that one-third of Americans are taking both prescription and over-the-counter medications that may raise the risk of depression in some individuals.

"The take away message of this study is that polypharmacy can lead to depressive symptoms and that patients and health care providers need to be aware of the risk of depression that comes with all kinds of common prescription drugs - many of which are also available over the counter".

"With depression as one of the leading causes of disability and increasing national suicide rates, we need to think innovatively about depression as a public health issue", Dr. Qato said. Even if these pills are not related to depression or anxiety, doctors do not associate them with such reactions, and neither do patients.

Physicians should consider assessing the medications their patients are taking when they screen them for depression, she and her colleagues urge in their paper.

At the time of the survey, all participants listed the medications they were taking and completed a depression screening that measured mood, sleep, and appetite.

MARK OLFSON: If you take the time to actually go through the fine print and read the insert, you'll see that each of these medications is associated with depression as an adverse effect.

According to the AFP, the JAMA report was released one week after U.S. health authorities said suicides have risen 30 percent in the past two decades, with about half of the suicides among people who had no history of mental illness. The study found about 1 in 3 adults in the U.S.is taking at least one of these drugs. This type of concurrent use is termed polypharmacy, and it is linked to a greater likelihood of feelings of depression.

By speaking to a doctor about concerning changes, medications can potentially be switched or reduced with the help of lifestyle changes.
