U.S.,Mexico and Canada to host 2026 World Cup

Dancers rehearse ahead of a show at the Golden Girls strip club in Moscow

"The merits of the bid, we feel we have a compelling proposal".

Despite owning up to having no facilities in place in form of infrastructure to support the tournament, Mooroccan team sold their bid on the premise that the country is willing to prepare everything as required by Federation Internationale de Football Association in time. "It's not only about our sport and sports, it's building a nation, it's a nation-builder". In the end it wasn't enough, and Americans fans can look forward to the return of soccer's greatest event in what can only be seen as a massive boost for the domestic game. Matches in Mexico will be played in Mexico City, Monterrey, Guadalajara; games in Canada will be played in Toronto, Montreal, and Edmonton, according to Pro Soccer Talk. And given that the 2026 tournament will be the first to host 48 teams-16 more than traditionally, infrastructure was a crucial factor.

The vote on the 2026 tournament followed a late round of lobbying around the delegates' Moscow hotels to try to woo last-minute undecided backers. Three cities each in Canada and Mexico will also host games. The tournament has been jointly hosted only once before, by Japan and Korea in 2002. With three host countries, it would be natural to give all three host sides a Day 1 showcase. They had done presentations for the five other confederations on Monday.

The so-called United bid gets 17 low-risk assessments and three medium (organizing cost, legal-government support, and human rights and labour standards).

To do so would have invited ridicule when it needed to build or renovate the 14 stadiums it wants to use - a task FIFA's technical report said "cannot be overstated".

The games will be played in 16 cities.

While Trump has been feuding with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau over tariffs and policy after the G-7 meeting and with Mexican leaders about his proposed border wall, the heads of state are not heavily involved in this World Cup bid.

Hard numbers aside, it is a vote with Gibraltar having the same say as China.

Canada will host men's World Cup matches for the first time, while Mexico gets its first taste of the event since staging the entire event in 1986.

But South Africa, the country that got the support of the continent, turned its back on the support they got from Africa by snubbing Morocco to give the United States of America the chance. The only two official bids came from the U.S. -Canada-Mexico of North America, and Morocco of Africa.

All seven cuts will come from the US finalists.

"I mean, this is like football Christmas for anyone", said the coach of Canada's national team, John Herdman, who called the decision a game-changer that will help stop the exodus of Canadian soccer players. A number of training sites would also have to go to a grass surface.
