Raccoon scales skyscraper in Minnesota

A still from the video

Wildlife Management was planning to release it into the suburbs, the company added. Nelson captured an up-close video of the raccoon "doing a little grooming" on the 23rd floor window ledge. "We're hoping he continues his climb", she said.

"Even wild animals know @cityofsaintpaul is a great place to reach for higher heights". "We went out there at about 8:30 on Tuesday morning and saw it was a raccoon".

The raccoon's saga began about two days ago when the brown, masked critter was spotted stranded on a ledge of the office tower.

The so-called #mprraccoon that held the world rapt on Tuesday as it scaled a downtown St. Paul skyscraper has finally topped the building.

It moved to the neighbouring UBS Tower, and started climbing up, not down.

It spent much of Tuesday going up and down the building's floors, occasionally napping on ledges. Above it, rather than the slightly-curved spaces it had previously climbed, rose an expanse of flat stone.

According to the Star Tribune, animal control officials are trying to lure the woodland creature with food in hopes of bringing the racoon to safety. Anything more might further spook the beast.

"Raccoons don't think ahead very much, so raccoons don't have very good impulse control", she said, admitting she could barely sleep she was so anxious about the animal.

News crews assembled, and gazed up at the animal through the night, occasionally bathing it with spotlights. At some point it began to descend, ever so slowly, but by the 17th floor decided against that route.

The little animal was trending under #MPRraccoon on Twitter after the MPR radio station opposite the high-rise for much of Tuesday.

Of course, Twitter being Twitter, there's already an account for the MPRRaccoon with a sassy, liberal voice.

The raccoon's ascent lasted a staggering 20 hours - Twitter celebrated the animal reaching the roof at 3 AM local time Wednesday morning, according to the BBC.
