Kim-Trump summit: Where does it leave the main players?

President Donald Trump declared that North Korea no longer posed a nuclear threat, even though Kim Jong Un hasn't committed to a timetable for giving up his weapons.

Trump added that everybody "can now feel much safer than the day I took office" and people could "sleep well tonight!"

Trump's Tuesday meeting with Kim produced a wave of United States concessions in exchange for vague, nonbinding promises from North Korea, but it did make nuclear war all but inconceivable at the present moment. Moscow and Beijing have long pushed a plan known as "freeze-for-freeze", referring to a halt to USA military maneuvers alongside a freeze in North Korean nuclear and missile tests.

A agreement signed by Trump and Kim at the summit does not have any mention of suspending war games.

Sherman, a special advisor to former President Bill Clinton and policy coordinator on North Korea said the two leaders were acting more in the interests of their leadership standing than efforts to denuclearise North Korea.

Almost an hour later, noted the "fortune" the USA will save as a result of his commitment to end U.S.

Pompeo said Trump would resume the military drills if North Korea stops negotiating in good faith.

He said he was confident Pyongyang understood the need for verification that it was dismantling its nuclear programme.

Fed Raises Interest Rates, Signals Faster Hikes on the Way
The Fed now envisions stronger growth this year - 2.8 percent, up from the 2.7 percent it predicted in March. Powell faces a tricky balancing act as the Fed attempts to bring interest rates toward historical averages.

The agreement signed Tuesday by Trump and Kim also included provisions for future negotiations, hinting at the possibility of more meetings between the USA and North Korean leaders.

Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera said Japan saw "US-South Korean joint exercises and the US military presence in South Korea as vital to security in East Asia". But Trump's triumphalism is not based on concrete commitments by Kim that were established by his own administration's expectations setting before the talks.

During an interview broadcast Wednesday with Fox News's Brett Baier, Trump said China could be "a little upset" because of a looming trade dispute between the two countries. The drills include both high-level commanders in computer-simulated defensive exercises and units in the field, all practicing readiness under a scenario in which the Korean Peninsula goes from peace to a crisis stage and then into open conflict, according to a defense official.

Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe spoke to Donald Trump after the summit, saying there was "great meaning in Chairman Kim's clearly confirming to President Trump the complete denuclearisation".

Trump described his meeting with Kim as "an interesting and very positive experience" and said North Korea "has great potential for the future". Gen. Kim Do-gyun told reporters before the talks.

Many lawmakers from both parties, while unready to declare the summit a diplomatic victory or defeat, remained skeptical the US could successfully negotiate a deal toward peace with Kim - but are letting the process play out.

A pair of Senate Democrats introduced a bill Wednesday that would prevent President Donald Trump from unilaterally drawing down the American troop presence on the Korean peninsula - not necessarily because he's said he will, but because they don't want to rely on his word that he won't. He said he planned to continue sharing the view with Washington and Seoul.

The August exercise, named Ulchi Freedom Guardian, has always been scheduled and final planning with several nations' military forces is well underway.
