How the Trump-Kim summit is playing in North Korea

PYONGYANG, Korea, Democratic People's Republic Of - North Koreans got their first big dose of news Monday that their leader Kim Jong Un had arrived in Singapore for what even the state-run media was calling a historic meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump.

Pope Francis has prayed that the summit this week between the US and North Korean leaders succeeds in laying the groundwork for peace.

Analysts will be closely scrutinizing the two men's body language - physical contact, facial expressions and more - as they meet for the first time in front of the Capella Hotel.

Discussions would focus on "the issue of building a permanent and durable peace-keeping mechanism on the Korean peninsula, the issue of realising the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula and other issues of mutual concern", KCNA said. Tuesday's meeting will be the first time a serving USA president has sat down with the leader of North Korea, and comes just months after fears of conflict soared as the two traded personal insults and threats of war.

Experts on North Korea say that the shortened meeting time leaves nearly no room to forge a path for Pyongyang's "complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearization", or CVID, which the US State Department was promising just last week.

Any nuclear deal will hinge on North Korea's willingness to allow unfettered outside inspections of the country's warheads and nuclear fuel, much of which is likely kept in a vast complex of underground facilities.

Mr Kim's selfie comes as part of a wider trend of world leaders getting in on the act.

He has made two trips to China since March to meet President Xi Jinping, and held summit talks with South Korean President Moon Jae-in in April and May in the Demilitarized Zone, which separates the two Koreas.

"We will not be surprised by any scenario", said the official.

Shortly afterwards, Donald Trump arrived in his official charter, the Air Force One, landing at the Paya Lebar Air Base in Singapore.

Pompeo said "any suggestion that the United States somehow lacks the technical expertise across government, or lacks it on the ground here in Singapore, is mistaken".

The senior official said Seoul could have made a decision to go ahead with a visit at "the very last minute", but reiterated the Moon administration would not rush the signing of a peace treaty.

President Donald Trump expressed optimism about Tuesday's meeting during a working lunch with Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and aides to both leaders.

The North Korean despot is now making a rare public appearance ahead of tomorrow's summit with Donald Trump, touring Singapore's lovely waterfront tourist sites this evening. He says Iran views Trump and the United States with "great pessimism", saying they are known for "quitting treaties and violating their commitments".

"That is an extraordinary offer of flexibility, considering (North Korea) poses a direct security threat to the United States", according to Saeed.

But he has since lowered expectations, backing away from an original demand for North Korea's swift denuclearisation.

Asked about Kim's sincerity, Trump said no one can be certain of anything, but "we're going to be certain soon" about Kim's intentions pursuant to ongoing negotiations.

White House officials said Monday they are optimistic a shift in U.S.

Prime Minister Theresa May's official spokesman said any agreement coming out of the summit should lead to "complete, verifiable and irreversible" denuclearisation by the Pyongyang regime. Each met separately with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. He has not left his country since taking office in 2011 other than to visit China and the South Korean side of the border Demilitarised Zone.

Kim suddenly emerged in his trademark Mao-style suit to walk out to his black limousine, accompanied by his sister, Kim Yo Jong, and aides.

Kim Jong-un's bodyguards are some of the fittest in the business.

In April, freaky footage emerged of 12 smartly dressed bodyguards running alongside Kim's limousine as he left a meeting with South Korean leader Moon Jae-in.
