'Best that could be achieved': Former diplomat weighs into Trump-Kim summit

President Donald Trump started Wednesday morning by touting his biggest accomplishment in diplomacy with North Korea and its leader Kim Jong Un: all but eliminating the threat of nuclear war.

It's about "setting the right conditions for moving forward with those talks", he said, declining to comment on why the President called them "provocative" - a term North Korea uses - or whether he or Trump consulted with US Forces Korea, the Pentagon, or the South Koreans on whether and how to take the step.

Critics at home said the USA president had given away too much at a meeting that gave worldwide standing to Kim.

But he said that was no longer the case, and everyone can "sleep well tonight".

Trump told reporters Tuesday that he trusts Kim, but that North Korea's denuclearization process will be thoroughly vetted and that the U.S.

Trump also said that Korean war will "soon end".

Melissa Hanham of the Center for Nonproliferation Studies pointed out on Twitter that the North Korean regime "had already promised to do this many times".

Mr Trump will depart Singapore from Paya Lebar Airbase at about 7pm, said the White House. But we're not gonna play the war games. "We have no intention of changing our joint drills with the US", Itsunori Onodera said.

Moon has championed engagement with the North, and the agreement's language on North Korea's nuclear program was similar to what the leaders of North and South Korea came up with at their own summit in April.

Angelina Jolie could lose primary custody of kids with Brad Pitt
Angelina is now filming the sequel to smash hit Maleficent in London and is renting a house for herself and her kids. The court determined that Maddox , 16, was old enough to decide how he wants to split his time between his parents.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Wednesday that the Trump administration will seek "major, major disarmament" steps from North Korea over the next two years, The Associated Press reported.

"A lot of pundits thought it was a mistake to meet with an unstable dictator - but Kim Jong Un said, 'You know what?"

"My meeting with Chairman Kim was honest, direct and productive", Trump said in a media availability following the meeting.

Trump's comment that the threat was now over was unlikely to provide relief to Japan and South Korea, both home to large US military presences, as both expressed concerns over his decision to halt the military exercises, which Pyongyang has long claimed are preparations for an invasion.

As Trump acknowledged that denuclearization would not be accomplished overnight, the North suggested Wednesday that Trump had moved away from his demand for complete denuclearization before US sanctions on the long-isolated country are removed. Kim Jong Un does nothing different at all, and we go back to our lives too.

Just months ago, Kim and Trump were trading threats and personal insults as the North conducted its sixth and most powerful nuclear test. "Even with intrusive verification, if we suspect North Korea has enough fissile material for 35 weapons, and they declare only 30, we wouldn't be able to find the remaining amount quickly".

"I want to hear the details by phone (from Trump)".

"Today, we had a historic meeting and chose to leave the past behind", Kim said, speaking through a translator.
