Precut melon recalled from Indianapolis-based supplier

Salmonella linked to pre-cut melon sickens 60 in Midwest

-States with people sickened: MI (32), IN (11), Missouri (10), IL (six) and OH (one). It started around the end of April and has spread into Georgia, Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina and Missouri.

"Reports of illnesses linked to these products are under investigation, and Caito Foods is voluntarily recalling the products out of an abundance of caution", the company said in a statement, adding it "has ceased producing and distributing these products as the company and FDA continue their investigation".

The Indiana Department of Health, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were investigating.

The salmonella outbreak in eight states has been linked to pre-cut melon sold at Walmart, Costco, Jay C, Payless, Whole Foods, Sprouts, Trader Joe's, Walgreens and Kroger stores.

The recalled fruits include fresh cut watermelon, honeydew melon, cantaloupe and fresh-cut fruit medley products containing one of these melons produced at the Caito Foods facility in Indianapolis. Those who reported getting sick range in age from less than 1 year to 97 years old with a median age of 67. Check out the full list of recalled products for UPC codes and SKUs to make sure you're not accidentally eating salmonella.

The CDC urges consumers not to eat recalled products, to check the fridge and freezer for the recalled melons and to throw them away or return them to the store for a refund.

Pre-cut melon purchased at Kroger, Jay C or Payless stores in IN and MI.

The symptoms include diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps, and they tend to occur within 12-72 hours and last 4-7 days.

It takes an average of two to four weeks from the time a person becomes ill until the illness is reported, so illnesses that occurred after May 20 might not yet be counted, the CDC website states.
