Officer rescues toddler running on busy highway

According to the Naperville Police Department, which posted the footage to its Facebook page Monday afternoon, the boy "escaped his mother's watchful eye".

Sgt. Anthony Mannino was on patrol when he saw the child running on the side of Route 59, so he used his patrol auto to block traffic.

Sgt. Anthony Mannino, a 24-year veteran of the Naperville, IL, Police Department, is being called a hero for his actions last month.

Mannino tells CBS Chicago he first thought the boy was a stray dog.

Mannino, who was on patrol, stopped his police auto to block a lane of traffic, ran after the child and scooped him up, telling him "you're OK".

Mannino was honored with a Life Saving Award from the police department Friday.

No one was hurt in the incident. No charges were sought in the case.

"I have twin boys", he said.

Mannino's sense of urgency increased as he chased the child, with cars speeding by.
