New disclosure shows growing Kushner wealth, debt

Jared Kushner Ivanka Trump made at least $82 million in outside income last year while serving in the White House filings show

Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner earned at least $82m (£61m) in outside income in their first year as unpaid senior advisers to the president, disclosure forms cited by USA media say.

Trump recently scored a batch of trademarks in China as her father continues trade talks with Beijing, garnering scrutiny from some ethics experts.

The filings show how the couple are collecting huge sums from other enterprises while serving in the White House, an extraordinary income flow that ethics experts have warned could create potential conflicts of interests. Trump held more than $55 million of that, and Kushner, at least $180 million.

Disclosures issued late Monday by the White House for Kushner and his wife, Trump's daughter Ivanka, showed that Kushner held assets totalling at least US$181 million ($239m).

Quickly becoming one of the most popular get-together spot for Republicans and Trump supporters across the world, the luxury hotel on the historic Old Post Office site, which opened September 2016, has brought in almost $4 million for the president's daughter in 2017, up from the $2.4 million reported in the 2016 statement. According to the news organization, the exact figure is hard to calculate as the Office of Government Ethics uses "broad ranges for assets and liabilities".

Kushner pulled in at least $70 million from his shares in his family's real-estate companies, including $5 million from Quail Ridge, a New Jersey apartment building that Kushner Cos. acquired previous year. Trump also received a $289,300 book advance and $747,622 from three companies tied to the Trump Organization's global projects. Other sources have estimated that Ivanka Trump's net worth is roughly $300 million, and Jared Kushner's net worth could be $800 million. Other income came from capital gains, Ms. Trump's businesses, the Trump Hotel in Washington D.C. and from the Trump Corporation salary and severance. In all, he took in at least $70 million, the Post said.

Peter Mirijanian, a spokesperson for the couple's attorney Abbe Lowell, told the Washington Post that Kushner and Trump's net worth has not substantially changed during their time at the White House and confirmed that they have both complied with all the ethical rules.

A spokesman for the couple said Monday that the couple's disclosure portrayed both assets and debts that have not changed much over the past year - and stressed that Kushner and Ivanka Trump have both complied with all federal ethics rules. The hotel has been a focus of lawsuits against the president and ethics watchdogs who say Trump is violating the Constitution by profiting from his office as diplomats spend big money there.
