Nadal beats Thiem in straight sets for 11th French Open title — NewsAlert

2018 French Open Thiem battles past Cecchinato to reach first Grand Slam final

However‚ the 29-year-old was unable to capitalise and Nadal made him pay in the 10th game when he claimed the opener off a netted backhand.

In Madrid, Thiem thrived in the quicker, higher altitude conditions to win their quarter-final in straight sets.

"Today I played more aggressive".

As for what sort of tactics will be employed Sunday, Nadal's coach, Carlos Moya, offered a hint. That did not prevent his uncle from delivering some tactical advice ahead of the final. So when I had the chances, I just tried to convert.

"True, I understand that everybody here, you have to write things", he said.

"He managed to do it well". It's still very early in the match", Thiem told the media, prior to the completion of Nadal's semi-fina before adding: "He's a big favourite against everybody.

The world number one goes in search of Roland Garros title number 11 against Dominic Thiem of Austria on Sunday.

Cecchinato is bidding to become the first Italian to reach a men's final at a Grand Slam tournament since Adriano Panatta won the title in Paris 42 years ago.

Cecchinato brilliantly saved two break points at 2-2 in the second and continued to hold his own to reach a tie-break, where a series of sensational winners from both players saw Thiem let three successive set points slip.

But while the Swiss has succumbed in three title matches in southwest London, Nadal has never tasted defeat in a final in southwest Paris, as Bresnik - and the rest of the tennis world - knows.

"I couldn't play my best because of him", said del Potro, the 2009 U.S. Open champion.

The sixth-seeded Frenchmen have won two Grand Slams together.

"Tough moment", Nadal would say later.

His uncle thought wrapping around Nadal's left forearm was too tight. After serving a fault, Nadal took the unusual step of heading to the sideline in the middle of a game.

After Thiem served, the trainer reappeared and massaged Nadal's forearm and wrist.

It was the Austrian's third consecutive appearance in the semifinals at Roland Garros.

If there were any reason for a bit of intrigue entering Sunday, it was this: Thiem beat Nadal on red clay at Rome in May 2017 and again at Madrid last month.

"It was a very hard first set and Juan Martin had lots of opportunities".

He has not been broken since. If I had won the second set, I think it would have been totally different the third set.

Thiem is contesting his first Grand Slam final.

The quarter-final tie was suspended on Wednesday with Nadal leading the second set 5-3.

Just 45 percent of Thiem's first serves went in, compared to Nadal's 65 percent.

Nadal had 12 unforced errors.

The sixth game was the longest of the match. The Argentine dropped the second set against the Croat but came back strong to take the match 7-6 (5), 5-7, 6-3, 7-5.

Nadal and Thiem have met nine times - all of them on clay.

Thiem, 24, is showing no signs of nerves in his first Grand Slam final.

The crowd cheered when Zidane was shown on the big screen.

Nadal simply had too much power and consistency for Argentina's fifth seed Juan Martin del Potro in the match that followed.

This was the No 5-seeded del Potro's first semifinal at Roland Garros since 2009.

Nadal acknowledged that Thiem has been a "very complex" opponent. He converted the second to make the score 2-1.

Schwartzman held serve to open the fourth se and Nadal held with an overhead smash to level one game apiece.

The 10-time champion is playing Dominic Thiem.

The trophy was carried into the Court Philippe Chatrier in a brown box during a brief ceremony before play begins and unveiled by the two stars of music and screen.

The 16th-seeded Gauff, who is 14 years old, beat 15th-seeded Leylah Annie Fernandez of Canada 6-4, 6-3.
