House passes motion supporting Trudeau amidst Trump tirades

Canada's House of Commons stood Monday in defiance of Donald Trump, denouncing his name-calling tirade against Justin Trudeau and endorsing the prime minister's firm response to protectionist USA tariffs and tweeted presidential threats against dairy producers and automakers.

In this handout photograph provided by The Strait Times, U.S. President Donald Trump with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un (unseen) during their historic U.S. -DPRK summit at the Capella Hotel on Sentosa island on June 12, 2018 in Singapore.

Trump said the global leaders left the G-7 meeting in good spirits, and said he had agreed to sign the meeting's summary document.

A reporter at the news conference in Singapore asked Trump why he seemed to be treating Kim, a dictator who has brutally oppressed his own people and threatened to attack the United States with nuclear weapons, better than the prime minister of one of our closest allies.

"That's what weak, dishonest Justin Trudeau did, and that comes right from Air Force One", said Navarro.

"Why should I, as President of the United States, allow countries to continue to make Massive Trade Surpluses, as they have for decades, while our Farmers, Workers & Taxpayers have such a big and unfair price to pay?" he tweeted.

"And I said, 'push him around?'" Trump said, describing his reaction to the press conference.

Trump adviser Peter Navarro, meanwhile, said Tuesday he made a mistake when he said "there's a special place in hell" for Trudeau.

"We finished the (G7) meeting and really everybody was happy".

Trump White House sows confusion on South Korean 'war games' pledge
The announcement took South Korean officials by surprise. "We pay for the majority of them", the president said . "It was discussed.

"As acknowledged by CBC/Radio Canada, 'Canada levies a tariff of 270 percent on milk, 245 percent on cheese and 298 percent on butter in an effort to keep USA and other foreign dairy imports out'".

"I think it's a very fair question", he said.

"On the steel tariffs I have a couple of fairly substantial operations in my own riding that are very anxious (about the US penalties). And it won't even be tough". Among other things, she said the government should be preparing to keep pace with corporate tax cuts and tax breaks south of the border. And while she joined with Mr. Trudeau and other European leaders in opposing the USA decision to slap import tariffs on steel and aluminum, she urged continued dialogue.

And it concludes with a direct shot at Trump, calling on the House to "reject disparaging and ad hominem statements by USA officials which do a disservice to bilateral relations and work against efforts to resolve this trade dispute".

In a weekend tweet, Green Party Leader Elizabeth May also expressed her support for Trudeau - and recommended other leaders follow suit.

The president said that Canada, Mexico and the European Union have taken advantage of an global trading system, benefiting from low US tariffs while imposing high trade barriers of their own.

Former U.S. Ambassador Bruce Heyman, who served under former U.S. President Barack Obama, has also backed Trudeau.

According to the USTR, America counts Canadian goods that are shipped to regional trading hubs within the United States and then re-exported back to Canada or Mexico as U.S. exports.
