Japan: Bullet train knife attack kills one

YOKOHAMA (Kyodo) - A man with a knife went on a rampage aboard a shinkansen bullet train bound for Shin-Osaka Station from Tokyo late Saturday, killing one passenger and injuring two others, police said. Some time after the departure of the young man suddenly began waving a knife and attacked were with him in the same vehicle passengers.

A man has died after being stabbed in the neck on a bullet train in Japan.

According to police, Kojima found a second knife.

As a result of incident one man was killed and two women injured.

Police arrested the 22-year-old unemployed suspect on suspicion of attempted murder, a local police spokesman said.

"Witnesses said passengers were crying as they ran to other coaches, shouting "Just keep going ahead" and "(the suspect) has a knife". Some were holding removed seats, apparently to protect themselves.

Japanese public broadcaster NHK quoted an eyewitness - a high-school student - as saying that he saw a man being led away in handcuffs without putting up any resistance.

The suspect left home in Okazaki last December, according to his 81-year-old grandmother, who lived with him.

"I have been always anxious about him", his grandmother said in a telephone interview early Sunday.

According to the Kanagawa prefectural police and other sources, three passengers on the train were attacked. She had called his mobile phone several times recently but was unable to talk with Kojima directly.

The incident took place on a bullet train travelling west in the south of Tokyo, which was carrying 880 passengers.
