Trump considering 3,000 pardons, including boxer Muhammad Ali

American Heavyweight boxer Cassius Clay, training in his gym 21st May 1965

President Donald Trump said Friday he is weighing a possible posthumous pardon for boxing great and humanitarian icon Muhammad Ali.

Well, Trump couldn't be too serious about pardoning the late boxer, who died in 2016.

Ali, then known as Cassius Clay, was convicted in 1967 of dodging the US draft during the War in Vietnam.

On Friday morning, after Trump mentioned his interest in pardoning Ali, Ali's lawyer Ron Tweel responded with some pertinent information that the president may have been missing.

Among those he has pardoned is Jack Johnson, a black heavyweight champion who was convicted in 1913 in a racially charged case of taking a woman across state lines for "immoral purposes".

Ali was sentenced to five years in prison for dodging the draft but never went to prison as he appealed his case to the US Supreme Court, which quashed the conviction in 1971. Although Trump is reportedly very into pardoning now, especially for celebrities and those with celebrity champions, naming Ali raised eyebrows. "This was all spontaneous and I think, as a lot of people like to say, impulsive".

His decision resulted in a draft-evasion conviction, and he was stripped of his heavyweight boxing crown in 1967. Mr Trump's comments follow his pardon of conservative political commentator and author Dinesh D'Souza, and his decision to grant clemency to Alice Johnson after lobbying by Kim Kardashian West.

The $533 million haul won by Vernon resident Richard Wahl in April is the highest jackpot payout in recorded in New Jersey. Oh my God, ' " he said, adding his heart was beating out of his chest "just like a 'Tom and Jerry" cartoon".

"There will be more pardons", Trump said.

Last week, Trump told reporters he was considering pardoning Martha Stewart and commuting the sentence of former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

He added he may seek recommendations from pro football players and other athletes who have protested racial injustice by kneeling during the national anthem. I understand that. I'm going to ask them to recommend to me people that were unfairly treated. The Supreme Court would overturn his conviction in 1971.

President George W. Bush (R) presents the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civil award, to boxer Muhammad Ali in the East Room of the White House 09 November 2005 in Washington, DC.

However, to be pardoned, you need to have been convicted of a crime. Of the 3,000 names, many of those names really have been treated unfairly.

Trump has also touted on twitter that he had "absolute power" to pardon himself, prompting the White House press office to clarify that it wouldn't be necessary for Trump to do so because he had done "nothing wrong".
