Trump aide says Trudeau 'stabbed us in the back'

Within minutes of the official release of the document, Trump attacked Trudeau on Twitter over what he described as the prime minister's "false statements" during the closing news conference - and the president announced the us would no longer endorse the communique.

The US president is en route to Singapore for a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong un, which Trump described as a "mission of peace".

Mr Kudlow suggested Mr Trump saw Mr Trudeau as trying to weaken his hand before that meeting, saying the president won't "let a Canadian prime minister push him around".

Trump announced yesterday he was backing out of a joint statement made by the countries that attended this weekend's G-7 Summit in Canada, after Trudeau gave a press conference in which he said Canada planned to retaliate against the Trump administration's recently-announced tariffs that will commence July 1.

Trump called Trudeau "very dishonest and weak" on Twitter on Saturday and then sent Kudlow and trade adviser Peter Navarro to hammer the message home on Sunday morning news shows in an extraordinary assault on a close USA ally and neighbor.

The G7 also includes Britain, Italy, France, Germany and Japan.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) on Twitter Saturday sought to counter the comments about Trudeau.

Navarro added that Trudeau's move was "one of the worst political miscalculations of a Canadian leader in modern Canadian history".

Justin Trudeau and President Trump participate in the working session at the G7 summit on Friday.

"Canadians, we're polite, we're reasonable, but we also will not be pushed around".

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) said it was wrong for Trump to pull out of the joint G7 communique that would have showed solidarity with America's best allies.

Earlier in the day, Trump had said there should be "tariff free" trade between the G-7 nations, though he did not elaborate on how or whether the USA would reduce barriers.

"Canada is very clear", she said. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., also called Trudeau's comments a stab in the back to Trump. "And that's what bad faith Justin Trudeau did with that stunt press conference".

Those were fighting words for Trump, who accused Trudeau of "false statements" and of being "very dishonest & weak".

Earlier in the day, reports The New York Times, Trudeau said the seven nations had come to an agreement on several foreign policy and economic goals, but he noted that some disagreements with Trump, primarily those on trade, remained. Mr. Trump said the move would protect domestic producers that were vital to United States security. The European Council President responded by saying, "We will not stop trying to convince our American friends and President Trump that undermining makes no sense at all".
