Korea Make Final Preparations for Trump-Kim Summit

Trump is right to lower expectations for Singapore summit

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, left, meets with Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the Istana or presidential palace, in Singapore, June 10, 2018.

After a 24 hour break from Twitter as he traveled to Singapore and settled into his hotel, around 9 a.m. local time on Monday (Sunday night in the U.S.), Trump threw some more punches at Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, continuing his trade-related feud with the United States' closest allies.

All his running bodyguards were decked up in black suits and blue ties.

US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un are set to meet in Singapore on Tuesday for a highly anticipated summit.

Earlier on Sunday evening, Trump arrived at Singapore's Paya Lebar Air Base and is now staying at the Shangri-La Hotel.

At the hotel lobby, grim-faced North Korean security guards warned other hotel guests not to take pictures as Kim walked to his Mercedes Benz limousine.

The summit will be the first meeting between Trump and Kim and mark a turnaround of relations between the two leaders after a long-running exchange of furious threats and insults.

During his preparation period, Trump continued on Monday to publicly brawl on Twitter with USA allies over trade.

The length of the initial private meeting has not been determined, said the official, but the two leaders will likely make that decision depending on how their talk unfolds.

Trump responded to the provocations with provocative rhetoric, belittling Kim as "Little Rocket Man" and threatening "fire and fury". Kim has led the USA team at the demilitarized zone working on a joint communique with North Korea.

Even so, the summit continues to be a highly sensitive topic in North Korea and it is hard - even more so than usual - to get people to express their opinions about it.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters that veteran diplomat Sung Kim is leading the USA delegation in a working group meeting Monday at the city-state's Ritz Carlton hotel. He was received by Singapore's Foreign Affairs Minister Vivian Balakrishnan.

"Thanks PM Lee for spending $20 million of taxpayers money, which can. help a lot of needy families in Singapore to survive", posted one Facebook user. Otherwise, the relationship between the two countries could quickly become fraught with frustration and misunderstandings.

Former US diplomats who have spent long days locked in negotiations with the North Koreans - habitually skilled and well-prepared interlocutors - say the discussions can be deeply frustrating and fraught with attempts by the isolated state to manipulate the process.

Trump pushed back on criticism that giving the North Korean leader a meeting with an American president is a major concession with nothing of value in return.

Expectations for the summit were being tempered by South Korean president Moon Jae-in, who said: "The deep-rooted hostile relationship and the North Korean nuclear issue can not be resolved in one single action in a meeting between leaders". In subsequent years, the US and South Korea signed a mutual defence treaty, but nothing for the North.

Even now, many experts doubt assurances by South Korea and the U.S. that Kim really intends to talk about eliminating his nuclear weapons program and believe he may be bent instead on easing pressure on his impoverished state and retaining as much of his arsenal as possible.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said United States and North Korean officials would hold working-level talks on Monday.

Before leaving for the ill-fated G7 Summit, Trump had underlined his resolve vis-à-vis a productive meeting with Kim by stating that the summit would be "much more than a photo-op".

Besides, Singapore's prime minister "wished Chairman Kim success for the US-DPRK Summit and expressed hope that the US-DPRK meeting will advance the prospects for peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and the larger region".
