Kim Singapore summit: All the latest updates

US President Donald Trump said Monday he thinks "things can work out very nicely" with North Korea on the eve of his historic summit with Kim Jong Un.

Singapore is hosting this year's meetings of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, which has seen the USA and China jockey for diplomatic influence in recent weeks.

Kim held a meeting with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong ahead of the planned summit.

Kim invited Trump to the North Korean capital on June 1 in a hand-written letter, according to South Korean newspaper JoongAng Ilbo, which cited an anonymous source in Singapore.

Trump has also raised the possibility of further summits.

He was greeted by Singapore's foreign minister, Vivian Balakrishnan, who posted a picture on Twitter of him shaking hands with Kim and the message: "Welcomed Chairman Kim Jong Un, who has just arrived in Singapore".

Singapore will spend about 20 million dollars to host the historic summit between Trump and Kim, Prime Minister Loong revealed. "We have to get denuclearisation, we have to get something going".

US President Donald Trump is set to arrive in the city-state later on Sunday.

Earlier this month, Singapore's defense minister said the USA trade threats were as disruptive to the global order as China's military deployments in the disputed South China Sea.

Formally ending the Korean War - 65 years after hostilities ceased with the signing of an armistice - will also be on the table at the first-ever meeting between a North Korean leader and a sitting American president.

"And he has that opportunity, and he won't have that opportunity again", Trump said.

Trump had called Kim "Little Rocket Man" and threatened to unleash "fire and fury like the world has never seen" on North Korea as it conducted several ballistic missile tests in defiance of worldwide warnings.

During the flight, the President spent time meeting with his staff, reading materials, and preparing for his meetings in Singapore.

On Wednesday, the summit was declared an "Enhanced Security Special Event" by the Minister for Home Affairs under the Public Order Act. Last week, Trump expressed his hope for the normalization of relations with Pyongyang following the summit and did not rule out the signing of a peace treaty between the two countries.

But many, if not all analysts, say that this is highly unlikely, given how hard it has been for Kim to build his program and that the weapons are seen as the only protection he has.

Any nuclear deal will hinge on the North's willingness to allow unfettered outside inspections of the country's warheads and nuclear fuel, much of which is likely kept in a vast complex of underground facilities.

The previous U.S. stance, said Bruce Klingner of the Heritage Foundation, was that "we don't deploy a president to negotiate a treaty, we deploy a president to sign a treaty where we know where every piece of punctuation is on that piece of paper".

North Korea wants a staged approach to dismantling its nuclear weapons program and a security guarantee from the United States in return.

Trump was pictured with the cake, delivered three days before his actual birthday.

The fighting ended on 27 July, 1953, but the war technically continues today because instead of a difficult-to-negotiate peace treaty, military officers for the US -led United Nations, North Korea and China signed an armistice that halted the fighting.
