What to do if you suspect someone is suicidal

CDC: Suicide rates on the rise in almost every state | TheHill

Suicide rates climbed more than 30 percent in half the states, and 54 percent of the people who died by suicide didn't have a known mental-health condition, the report found. She said celebrity suicides also typically prompt an increase in calls to suicide help lines.

The report shows the highest contributing factors being relationship problems, an immediate crisis or problematic substance abuse, but experts along with the CDC say most commonly it is a result of a combination of factors.

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or you can visit SuicidePreventionLifeline.org. While this was obviously a large increase, there were 23 other states that reported bigger jumps in that same timeframe.

While suicide prevention efforts largely focus on identifying and providing treatment for people with mental health conditions, the majority of people who committed suicide did not have known mental health problems, according to the report. But Dr Joshua Gordon, director of the National Institute of Mental Health, said that contradicts years of data, suggesting many have gone undiagnosed and untreated.

In Maryland, the number of suicides rose by more than a third, from 435 in 1999 to 586 in 2016, the most recent year for which data were available, according to the CDC. Over 1,000 people die by suicide in our state each year, but the norm isn't suicide death. Everyone can help by learning the warning signs for suicide and how to respond.

The CDC reports that suicides from opioid overdoses almost doubled between 1999 and 2014.

A suicide study, conducted by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, revealed the decision to attempt suicide is usually done on impulse. After actor Robin Williams died by suicide in 2014, for example, researchers tracked a 10% increase in suicide deaths over the next four months, likely in part due to a high volume of detailed news stories. Suicide rates were higher among males in Maryland, ranging from about 17 to 18 per 100,000 males.

Gordon said doctors need to ask patients at every opportunity about their mental health and evaluate their risk for suicide.

"A big problem that has not yet been addressed in practice is that we continue to rely nearly entirely on people themselves to proactively tell us if they are suicidal", said Matthew Nock, a professor of psychology at Harvard University. "They might actually bring up specifically that they're thinking of suicide".

Keep them safe. Reduce access to lethal means for those at risk.

Keltz believes talking about mental health and suicide will help erase the stigma associated with it. Employers, schools and communities can help people feel supported and unashamed to seek help. Follow up to see how they're doing.
