A USA military official confirmed the attack in the country's south, about 50 kilometers (32 miles) north of the port city of Kismayo, killed one us troop and wounded four others.

Four U.S. service members who were wounded in an extremist attack in Somalia that killed one special operations soldier have been treated and discharged, the U.S. military said Saturday. The incident occurred on Friday afternoon local-time. Names of the soldiers were not immediately released, while next of kin were notified.

One member of the "partner forces" was wounded along with four other U.S. troops.

This is the first American death while in combat on the African continent since October.

"The US provided advice, assistance and aerial surveillance during the mission".

The statement said, "The overarching goal in Somalia for the Department of Defense is provide a safe and secure environment for the Somali population". One of the wounded United States service members received sufficient medical care in the field, and the other three were medically evacuated for additional treatment. The fourth received sufficient medical care on the scene.

Africa Command said the combined US, Somali and Kenyan force included some 800 troops and was part of a mission in the area tasked with setting up a permanent combat outpost when they came under attack.

President Donald Trump in early 2017 approved expanded military operations against al-Shabaab, leading to an increase in USA military personnel to more than 500 and the launch of dozens of drone strikes. They were awaiting transport "for additional medical evaluation".

The U.S. has about 1,000 special operations personnel in Africa.

That was believed to be the first death of a U.S. soldier in Somalia since the 1993 Black Hawk Down disaster. There are an estimated 7,300 American troops around the globe conducting these special operations.

Friday's attack in Jubaland is likely to put renewed scrutiny on America's counterterror operations in Africa. He was the first US casualty in Somalia since the Black Hawk Down incident in 1993. The US said no civilians were killed during the strikes. "The missions we actually accompany on have to have some type of strategic value in terms of the enemy we're going against".

The terrorist group al-Shabaab, the local al-Qaeda affiliate, has claimed responsibility for the attack.
