Canadian Grand Prix: Mercedes delay new engine over ‘quality issues’

It was also the site of his first Formula 1 win in 2007 and he has dominated in each of the past three years, making him the modern day master of Montreal.

That emotionally charged weekend was capped off by a sixth win in Canada.

"It is a good one and it is still all healthy and it is reliable so there are no concerns on that".

If the four times world champion wins again on Sunday he will equal Michael Schumacher's record of seven victories in Montreal.

Races for the Canadian Grand Prix runs from June 8-10 at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

"I'm excited to try to build on the history I have here", said Hamilton, who leads the drivers championship by 14 points over Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel.

Under the regulations, each driver has three engines, turbos and MGU-Hs to last a whole season before incurring grid penalties and two MGU-Ks, energy stores and control electronics.

Whether it will be a productive one for the team remains to be seen.

While Ferrari and Red Bull will have fresh engines, Mercedes will go with the same power unit.

The race will also see two other drivers chasing career milestones with Vettel looking to take his 50th career victory and McLaren's Fernando Alonso (Canada victor in 2006) celebrating his 300th race entered.

Mercedes' decision affects all of its teams and drivers, so in addition to factory drivers Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas, Force India's Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon and Williams' Lance Stroll and Sergey Sirotkin will also stick with the engines they have been using since the start of the season. "It's a circuit where overtaking is relatively straightforward, speeds are high and the cars are pushed to their limits".

"If the others are bringing upgrades and are using fresh engines - particularly with how close we are on performance - we won't be in a position to fight I don't believe", he said.

In a career of highlights and firsts many have come in Montreal, including his first pole and win.

The big loser could well be McLaren who have been the slowest in a straight line throughout this year and are unlikely to make up that deficit in other areas. Vettel has dropped nine while Kimi Raikkonen has dropped 27.

Another went even further, putting the Ferrari slogan Forza Ferrari alongside a GIF of a Mercedes Benz auto ornament.

Stroll nonetheless salvaged eighth in Azerbaijan, the team's only points finish so far this year, and reckons he has stepped up himself compared to last season.
