UFC 225 main event in tatters as Yoel Romero misses weight... twice

Robert Whittaker left punches Yoel Romero in their interim UFC middleweight championship bout Las Vegas last July

An interim welterweight title fight between Rafael dos Anjos and Colby Covington will co-headline UFC 225.

New Zeland's Robert Whittaker (185) has made championship weight to meet Yoel Romero in one of the Ultimate Fighting Championship's biggest pay-per-views in 2018 to date.

After Yoel Romero missed weight for the second consecutive time in a title fight, Bisping sounded off.

In what was supposed to be his first title defence, Australia's first UFC champion will face the man he fought and beat in his last outing.

However, as the ceremonial weigh-ins begun, we quickly learned that the main event would go on but just as a non-title fight.

UFC 225 takes place at United Center in Chicago. Romero was granted two hours to see if he could lose that last pound but did not show up until 10 minutes before the cut-off point. Romero won that bout via a knockout, and although he wasn't awarded a belt, he immediately was given a title shot despite his weight cutting issues.

Looking significantly worst-for-wear, "The Soldier of God" once again stripped down and weighed in behind a towel.

"There wouldn't be a fight", Whittaker said.

According to Okamoto, the UFC is now working with Romero and Whittaker's camps to try to keep the main event together.

"I don't think he can change that drastically at his age and in this little amount of time before the fight", he said. "If you don't make weight, there's no fight".

Gold Coast fighter Megan Anderson makes her debut against Holly Holm, a former champion best known for knocking out Ronda Rousey in Melbourne in 2015.
