Merkel predicts 'contentious' G7 summit with Trump

State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert More

German Chancellor Angela Merkel says that she expects "difficult discussions" at the Group of Seven summit in Canada later this week.

In Germany's first-ever "Chancellor's Question Time", Angela Merkel fielded lawmakers' inquiries in the Bundestag on issues ranging from immigration to strained relations with Washington.

"Of course I will try to speak with the American president on the current problems we have, especially with regard to Iran and with regard to trade tariffs", she said.

The Trump administration also slapped steel and aluminium tariffs on its traditional partners.

There is "no sense in papering over divisions" on trade issues, she said.

Ministers from Germany, France and Britain have already written to USA officials urging them to shield European companies working in Iran from getting caught up in Washington's new sanctions on the Islamic Republic.

Xi Jinping says Vladimir Putin is his ‘best friend’
Vienna has been discussed as a possible venue for a summit between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, the Kremlin said Saturday. Mr Trump plans to leave the summit early and will skip G7 meetings about climate change, clean energy and ocean protection.

Tehran has threatened that it will pull out of the agreement and resume its nuclear activities if other parties to the deal don't safeguard Iran's interests under the accord.

"There must not be a compromise simply for the sake of a compromise", she said.

The German leader again questioned the durability of trans-Atlantic relations by referring to eye-raising comments she made over a year ago in which she said that "the times when we could fully rely on others are to some extent over".

Turning to European reform, Merkel said the principle of conditions being attached to any aid doled out in the euro zone, including under a proposed European Monetary Fund, was not up for question.

In a weekend newspaper interview, Merkel offered her most detailed response to French President Emmanuel Macron's ideas for reforming Europe, seeking to avert a damaging rift with Paris at a time of anxiety over Italy and growing transatlantic tensions.

Merkel was asked by lawmakers from the nationalist Alternative for Germany, or AfD, and hard-left Left Party whether it wouldn't make sense to talk more with Russian Federation.
