French Open: Madison Keys and Sloane Stephens Reach the Semifinals

Tennis French Open

Sloane Stephens has advanced to the French Open final for the first time, beating Madison Keys 6-4, 6-4 in an all-American semifinal on Court Philippe Chatrier. After sitting out almost a year because of an injured right foot that needed surgery in January 2017, she has soared up the rankings and now made it to her second major final in the past ninth months.

Keys and Stephens contested the 2017 US Open final, which the Florida-born Stephens triumphed in straight sets. The Russian-born, Florida-based Kazakh player took exception to just one service call and smiled warmly at Keys when they shook hands over the net.

Davenport caught up with Keys in Paris ahead of the French Open and is proud of how her charge handled the decision to part ways with Kindlmann.

It had been a very solid first set from Stephens after facing those early break points, and she continued to motor early on in the second, breaking Keys early on and once again looking very solid on serve. The Romanian also came up one victory shy of a major championship at the Australian Open in January, beaten there by Caroline Wozniacki.

Not only that but neither had ever been beyond the last 16 of the French Open before this year.

After fighting through three consecutive five-set match-wins, Zverev was hampered by a thigh injury, and the German second-seed inevitably ran out of steam with Thiem running out a 6-4 6-2 6-1 victor. "That's why I got angry with someone".

"I've been getting my own stringing done, today we should practice at this time, let's see who is open. I obviously rely on what I learned there and how to manage my emotions and manage the moment". One of the four will become a first-time French Open finalist.

Twice the runner-up in Paris, Halep has qualified for the final by defeating 2016 champion Garbine Muguruza 6-1, 6-4.

So, Keys completed the 12th win over a Top 100 players this season, her 145th all-time.

Stephens will have no problem setting about trying to inflict more misery on Keys as she eyes a second grand slam title.

"We are both playing well in the semis of a grand slam. It's go time. Until then, we're the same girls as always".

Both new-look pairings went out in the first round. "She played great, " Putintseva said.

The times are good now.

"I have three: my mom, my coach, my agent. I was close to quit". A spot in the finals is at stake.

Jake Ball called into England ODI squad following Chris Woakes injury
England seamer Chris Woakes has joined Ben Stokes on the injury list for next weekend's one-day worldwide against Scotland. Furthermore, the 29-year Woakes is also expected to miss the major part of the ODI series against Australia .

"I definitely needed you guys today, you helped me get through", Keys told the crowd on Court Suzanne Lenglen.

Putintseva served for the first set but was unable to put it away.

The fate of the first set was decided by a single break from Stevens.

The question on everybody's lips right now is the remarkable form that Garbine Muguruza has shown at Roland Garros and whether Simona Halep can halt the Spaniard's run.

He lost the set 6-2 and left the court.

Immediately after double-faulting, del Potro turned to the spectator and gestured angrily.

At the start neither were giving an inch before perhaps a more aggressive state of mind from Putintseva gave her the edge to take a solitary break point to take the lead.

"Just a insane match", the third-seeded Cilic said.

Nadal raised his level when it mattered much and fended off three break points in the eighth game.

Overcast with rain that stopped play in the evening.

How do they match up?

His opponent today will be Juan Martin del Potro, who got choked up after waiting almost a decade to return to the final four in Paris - and dealing with three wrist operations in the interim.

The women's semifinals are also on Thursday's schedule.
