Alice Johnson embracing newfound freedom after two decades behind bars

While some people think that Trump is just using Kim as a political pawn or that she is giving the president legitimacy, the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star is just glad Alice Marie Johnson is now a free woman.

When Kim Kardashian West learned that Alice Marie Johnson - a nonviolent drug offender serving a life sentence - would be freed, she broke the news to her while sobbing on the phone.

Earlier on Wednesday, the White House announced they had commuted her sentence after Kim Kardashian intervened on her behalf during a meeting with Trump at the White House. With prison now behind her, she's finding freedom in the arms of her family. "She could have just saw the video or read an article or whatever and just said oh that's a shame or whatever and went on with her life, but she didn't, she chose to get involved in a major way", Johnson said of Kardashian. "The only thing I can do is to make him proud that I he did it and not disappoint him", she said.

Fixing tough sentencing laws had been a priority of former president Barack Obama's administration, but he failed to win congressional support, prompting a stream of presidential pardons and clemency actions.

Kardashian West is also responding to the decision, tweeting "BEST NEWS EVER!".

An American awaits in the final, as Sloane Stephens beat Madison Keys in a rematch of the US Open final. Maria Sharapova's French Open comeback has been ended in straight sets by ruthless Garbine Muguruza .

The last 24 hours have been a whirlwind for the 63-year-old Johnson.

"Ms. Johnson has accepted her responsibility for her past behavior and has been a model prisoner over the past two decades".

Kardashian, the wife of rapper Kanye West, met with Trump at the White House last week to appeal for the release of the great-grandmother convicted of cocaine trafficking. "Because I felt like she's was a good person-you can see that in her", Kardashian said in the exclusive interview.

Indeed, the wife of former Trump campaign aide George Papadopoulos, who pleaded guilty to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about his Russian Federation contacts, appeared on Fox News this week to lobby her husband's case. She was later released from an Alabama prison after serving 21 years of her life sentence for a nonviolent drug offense and money laundering charges, CNN reported. After months of correspondence, Kardashian was finally granted a meeting with POTUS-an opportunity she knew she had to take, even though some believed it was risky.

Kardashian welcomed the commutation of Johnson's sentence with a tweet. It was a moment that I'll never forget. Others, including White House counsel Don McGahn and chief of staff John Kelly, were less enthusiastic, according to a senior administration official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations.
